During excavations in the North Grove, our Archaeology team discovered two “large cent” coins, the first series of pennies issued by the newly formed United States.

Minted in Philadelphia, these copper coins are slightly larger than a modern quarter. They are dated 1798 and 1817 and represent the households of George Washington and Bushrod Washington, George Washington's nephew who inherited Mount Vernon.
