Willow Oak / Charlotte, NC - Winner of the 2022 AIA Charlotte Honor Award
This modern residence features a blend of cypress and mill-finished steel, with large sliding doors seamlessly integrating indoor and outdoor spaces. Efforts were made to preserve the natural surroundings, with the six-car garage, known as The Moto Dojo, cleverly concealed with a green roof and rooftop deck. Solar panels power the house and electric cars.
Throughout the design process, design ingenuity was paramount due to the property’s unique characteristics, including its narrow and elongated shape (68’W x 1,000’L) and 40’ elevation change. The garage was excavated to merge with the landscape, creating a flowing backyard onto the roof. Overscaled windows and doors served as a kind of optical illusion to reduce the perceived scale of the home to match the massing of other homes in the neighborhood, while a sunken courtyard harmonized with the topography. Inside, minimal interior columns maximize space.

Cluck Design Collaborative : The First 20 Years
A Love Letter to American Cities
Hardcover Book: 8” x 6.5” - 454 pages
Cluck Design Collaborative, The First 20 Years celebrates two decades of super cool design and the people behind the work. While the official origin story of Cluck can only be told with a beverage in hand, this monograph offers a taste of their journey through various projects and how they have contributed to all different types of neighborhoods and cities. Cluck has always strived to be different; different in how they treat their clients, different in how they work together, and different in the results they achieve. From projects ranging from a tiny bike part to a 245 unit multifamily project, the focus has always been on acting as a mirror to the client and serving the needs of each neighborhood that they call home.

Rampton Lodge / Saluda, NC
Located atop the Blue Ridge Escarpment, Saluda, North Carolina provides gorgeous outdoor recreation opportunities and all the charm of quaint, small town living. In keeping with the spirit of the area, the client requested that the Rampton Lodge be designed and built with as little visual and ecological impact on its natural surroundings as possible.
Respect for the preservation of mountain ridgeline views prompted the decision to locate this home downslope of the parcel’s hillcrest. To minimize the removal of mature hardwood trees, an existing forest clearing was chosen for the home site. The area’s topography also played a part in the home’s design, providing on-grade access to both the upper and lower floors. To mimic the natural surroundings, the roof pitch matches the site’s average slope and a blended grey color palette camouflages the home in its environment. A two-story, wood and steel bike chain-inspired sculpture in the home as well as a bicycle garage and mechanic’s area were inspired by the owners’ love for mountain biking. For those who want to really bask in the mountain air — a large, screened, treehouse-inspired sleeping porch provides overnight accommodations after a day of cycling.

Greyfriars Residence / Mooresville, NC. Winner of the 2021 Housing Citation Award and 2019 Merit Award.
Most lakefront homes create a barrier — a large, unnatural obstacle that blocks beautiful views of the lake and natural surroundings. This modern lakefront structure was designed to become part of the landscape so visitors could enjoy the lake from anywhere on the property.
The first job was to situate the home perfectly to maximize the Lake Norman experience from both the interior and exterior. The next task was to design the house so that the expansive view could be enjoyed from inside the house, from the front yard, and even from the street. This was accomplished by creating a double-height pass-through walkway between the garage and the main structure. Large windows on the front and rear align with open areas inside the home. This allows the viewer to see directly through the structure, thus minimizing the profile and obstruction of the lake views from the front of the house.

New Project + Video Launch: Artist Studio Expansion / Charlotte, NC
This Artist Studio Expansion transforms an existing one-story garage art studio into a two-story creative space. The studio is meticulously designed to match the mid-century modern main residence, a kit house from the Acorn Deck House Company. Serving as a dedicated space for artistic pursuits, the ground floor functions as a printmaking studio, complete with a newly added bathroom, a wash sink, and an art display window facing the driveway. An internal spiral staircase provides an elegant and space-efficient connection to the newly added second floor, which houses a library and figure drawing area.
The design prioritizes natural light, utilizing an expansive glass wall to illuminate the space and blur the lines with the surrounding woods. Inside, striking vaulted wood ceilings with exposed beams directly mirror the architectural warmth and style of the main house. The dark gray exterior features warm wood accents and integrates an outdoor "stadium stair" and planter system that gracefully negotiates the site's topography. Finally, the “waffle door” entrance was made to match the door to the main house, tying everything together beautifully.

Church on Parkwood Apartments / Charlotte, NC. Winner of the 2022 AIA Charlotte Adaptive Reuse Award.
Completed in 2021, the Church on Parkwood Apartments multi-family residential project is a love letter to the salvation and renovation of a building—as opposed to tearing it down and starting anew. The church, originally built in 1929 by Louis Asbury, has long been a local favorite. Current modernization efforts focused on highlighting the history of the church, while bringing new life into the space. In fact, the stained glass windows in each of the 18 units were preserved beautifully, and seamlessly incorporated along with the names of original churchgoing families. The remaining stained glass windows that could not be worked into the residential units were used to build a small mail pavilion, which is one of the most impressive and impactful design features in the project.
Because the emphasis was on preserving the building, there was a tighter working space and fewer units were able to be incorporated and accommodated. These limitations led to innovations, such as housing the HVAC units in decorative structures made to look like large, screened lanterns positioned along the exterior wall. These lanterns are beautiful and functional, and they—along with the original pulpit still being used in the leasing office—harken back to the origins of the building. Finally, the stair to the entry was rotated 90 degrees to not only implement extra safety precautions, but also to create drama and an opportunity for landscaping between the building and the updated sidewalk.
