I had the great fortune of soaring into 2020 in production and on the bandstand for my fourth edition of Salon DECOLORES at Suzanne Allen Studio in Charleston, South Carolina, on the 2nd of January. My partners in music, invited guests, a full house and a set list of new-to-me/re-imagined/transformed music made ‘PEREGRINA: Songs for the Journey’ simply sublime. AND. SO. MUCH. FUN. ‼️😌💙🎶🙏🏽💫

Thank you Gerald Gregory and Bill Carson, on piano and guitar, respectively, for bringing this music to life. It’s truly an honor to meet in the music. Your enormous talent and openness to wherever the music takes us makes it something other-worldly, transcendental. It’s inspiring, to say the least. 💛

Thank you Grace McNally, Alva Anderson and Adam Parker for saying “YES!” and for filling the room with your exceptional talent and creative energy. I learned so much from each of you and what joy it is to share the stage with you. 💛

Deepest gratitude for my wildly beautiful friend Suzanne Allen and her dynamite team for sharing their studio that gives this music it’s magical home. I am in awe. ⚡️🥰

It was an absolute gift to be accompanied by querida Camela Guevara’s artwork for this show. Browse and buy her magnificent work here: camelaguevara.com and on Instagram

Special thanks to my dear friend, Alice Keeney, for capturing these moments (and so many more) with her brilliant eye. 💛📷

To everyone who bought tickets, brought friends and shared your time, THANK YOU for your presence and for supporting live music. Thank you for supporting me as an artist and this energy in our community. 🌟🌟🌟

They say, “Tell me who you who you walk with and I’ll tell you who you are.” I’m more than alright with that. Thank you each and every one for bringing out the best in me. I am grateful beyond measure. My heart is full. I love you, madly! 💓💓💓

There’s so much more to come. Stay tuned! 🎶🤩🌈🎉

In the meantime, here’s to a new decade of answering the call, spreading our wings, a path well-lit, and peace, perspective and song for the journey. Until next time. Hasta la próxima. Onwards and upwards. Siempre adelante. 🎼 💖✨🕊

Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture

#Onthisday in 1865, enslaved African Americans were notified of their freedom by Union troops in Galveston, TX—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Known as #Juneteenth, this day is widely celebrated as the end of chattel slavery in the U.S. Juneteenth marks our country’s second Independence Day. Though it has long been celebrated among the African American community, it is a history that has been marginalized and still remains largely unknown to the wider public. The legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of deep hope and urgent organizing in uncertain times. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control, some enslaved people would not be free until much later. Our Museum is a community space where that spirit can continue to live on – where histories like this one can surface, and new stories with equal urgency can be told. #APeoplesJourney #ANationsStory
