We are staying home this year! For no other reason than we were away last year and wanted to enjoy this year in our home. The kids helped me pick out the spread, healthy and balanced, and I have to admit I’m kind of excited. As much as I enjoy the holidays, with all the months of homeschooling we had I am a little tired of cooking so I wanted to make sure that whatever it is that we are making I wouldn’t be in the kitchen for hours. There is so little time in my life when I get to really just sit with the kids and relax with them and they are just growing so freaking fast. I also needed to be able to prep a lot in advance because the kids do not have school the entire week before and I am solo parenting pre usual. I did a quick search of all my favorite food bloggers and think I put together a pretty good line-up. Stayed tuned for that later this week, hopefully it will inspire you to!!

I wanted to share this super quick and extremely effective #meditation that I have been incorpotating lately to really help me stay calm + relaxed and get #center. It's been great for those IN THE MOMENT, moments, if you know what I mean 😉. I noticed especailly with the kids being around more that I tend to be more reactionary and really prefer to be more present to help them through whatever it is that is causing the friction, #consciousparenting. I know that this is even more important now, than most times because whether or not we realize it the kids are also stressed from the change in schedule, the isolation from friends #socialdistancing, the lack of personal space, not knowing how long this will really go on and then they also absorb #engery + #stress from loved ones around them who may be putting it off as well. I know they may not be able to communicate all their feels right now so it is extra important that I have mine in check!

A perspective for you 💫

Each of us is so unique in the way we respond to the exposure of any environmental toxin or foreign substance. It is completely dependent upon our genetic make-up and our lifestyle, as well as our health history. How well our body can process (or fight) the substance is also dependent on all the above. We have the ability to turn our genes on and off based on what we are exposed to on a regular basis, what we eat, what products we use on our bodies and in our homes. It all matters! One completely healthy person can be exposed to a virus and anything in that human can trigger a response if they are predisposed to it.

The GOOD news is that you have control of your health you just need to:

1) Be aware of what you are exposing your self to.
2) Make sure you are getting the majority of your nutrient from quality #wholefoodplantbased sources
3) Staying active in a way that feels good and natural for your body.
4) Managing stress properly + fully
5) Enjoy life in the processes

Believe it or not times of transition are best for forming new habits. Forming new habits require that consistency be established with out friction. For most people they find that establishing health habits are super difficult because they force them into their current lifestyle as an after thought, something they are "suppose to be doing". Does that sound familiar?

When habits are created in alignment with our current lifestyle they stick because nothing can get in the way of them. They are perfectly placed for success. It is not sheer will power that makes a person successful at achieving their goals. It is effectively incorporating habits into their routine that guides them to be successful.

I know this all to well and sometimes it takes me longer to get to where I want to be but I know it will come, I just need to be consistent and very intentional about the incorporation of the new routines into my lifestyle.

It is the foundation of my coaching practice. All the science, food guidance and recipes will mean nothing if you can't create the habits to use them. So this is where we start, goals and habits.

Spring is a time of renewal, rebirth and awakening. It is an ideal time to incorporate new habits into our lives as we shift from a state of nourishing hibernation to a period of energizing activity!

Where is your friction?

Iron + Kids 🥦

How can I help my kids get increase their iron levels? This is a question that is becoming more + more common. The most common causes for low iron are picky eaters + poor absorption or improper digestion.

Here are some tips that can help to increase absorption:
1) Eliminating dairy consumption in children until they are at least 12 months old and then after 12 months limiting it to just 2 cups per day. Dairy is very low in iron and super filling which can keep kids from consuming other iron rich foods. If I can be completely candid we do not consume dairy at all. I have found that the benefits of NOT consuming it outweigh the benefits that can be achieved from having it in our diet.
2) Increasing Vitamin C 🍋 consumption. One of the many benefits of vitamin C is that it can help with the absorption of iron from plant (non-heme) sources. Plant sources are also great for aiding in digestions because of their natural occurring enzymes. It is why we always use lemon as a main ingredient in our green smoothie. In fact the green smoothie was a first food for all my kids.
3) Introduce these foods into their diet regularly! Remember that it can take up 12x of exposing something to kids before they will acquire a taste for it. Just be consistent and keep it fun!
-Lentils (all beans really but lentils are super rich)
-Nuts + Nut Butters
-Dark Leafy Greens (kale, spinach, Swiss chard, collard greens)
-Vegetables, including broccoli, asparagus, parsley, watercress, Brussels sprouts
-Edamame + Tofu
-Dried fruits, such as raisins, prunes, dates, and apricots, dark cherries
-Dark Chocolate (70% cocoa or more)

Give this iron rich green smoothie a try:
11/2 cups nut milk, 1 cup greens, 1/2 oatmeal, 1 tbs nut butter, 1 tbs dark cocoa, 1/2 cup cherries,1 banana
* If you want to add a little more sweetness throw in some dates or add local honey.*

PSA for Moms: It takes time, a long time to get back to "normal" or for many a new normal after giving birth and that's totally okay, in fact it's necessary! We live in a society were there is this insane pressure often times unconscious to be back to normal ASAP. We get this pressure through social media, advertising, even work + our partners most of the time it's not even intentional. But the worst culprit, is ourselves! So I'm going to give you permission right now to take it easy. There is no rush and I promise if you are good to your body now you will be even stronger later. It sounds hard to believe but there are a few things to take into account.

1) Birth it's self is a huge trauma to the body. It's totally natural + suppose to happen AND * we are perfectly equipped to heal from it.* We heal from it on our bodies own terms though. If we do not give our bodies that space to heal properly + fully we are setting ourselves up for complications later.

2) There is a tremendous amount of #hormones that are released before, during + after birth and it takes times for those excess hormones to leave the body + rebalance. When we force that or introduce other hormones through stress, poor eating, environmental toxins, never mind if god forbid there are any complications with the #pregnancy + #birth, it becomes more difficult for that rebalance to occur.

3) #Exercise is necessary and very appropriate but it needs to be tailored to your body and what feels good to you. Forcing workouts that are too intense or to demanding can actually set you back and not help you move forward. So listen closely to what your body is telling you!

It took me 2 years to finally feel like myself with each one of my children. It was gradual and sometimes I felt like I was going backwards but when that magic time came for me I knew immediately that I made it.

Be it his or not this quote has resonated very deeply with me since I read it. It has become the foundation for my approach to raising my children. I believe it is far more effective, cost effective + socially responsible to do everything in my power to give my children the healthiest start + the kind of future they deserve.
It is one reason I spend so much time researching products, their chemicals, the risks + benefits of using them. I feel, that for a really long time that was not done. Things were just presented as safe with no regard to the outcome of extended use on the environment or lives of our children, our future.

There is now a whole pandemic of noncommunicable #diseases + #disorders that have been on the rise over the past 50 years.
