What are most grateful for or proud of from 2021?

As 2021 comes to a close, I’m choosing to reflect on all the wonderful things that happened this year instead of worrying about what could have been. Although in many ways, it wasn’t an easy year, there are so many things to celebrate and be grateful for!

Here are some of my favorites things from 2021:

✅ Shifting my business to focus on my passion for supporting other women on their fertility journey
✅ Connecting with some incredible, strong women in this community
✅ Creating new opportunities and starting a new job at the incredible wellness studio Blue Heron Acupuncture & Apothecary
✅ Learning to listen to my intuition and become more in-tune with my body and emotions
✅ Watching my husband complete his internship and start a new career
✅ Spending time with close friends, family and my puppy
✅ Being surrounded by an amazing support system
✅ Learning to be truly grateful for everything that I have

Throwback to 2017 Zanzibar, Tanzania where our Consultation Team Leader, Kristi Galloway taught an 8-week mindfulness series at two sober houses- run by the Detroit Recovery Project.

Since the early 1990s, Eastern Africa has been one of the world's transit points for he**in traffic. Zanzibar is one of the gateways for this transit. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime claims 22 tons flood the east African coasts every year. This massive influx of he**in led to a soar in consumption with an estimated seven percent of the one million inhabitants battling he**in addiction.

Detroit and Malaika are two of 11 sober houses in Zanzibar that have assisted over 3,000 individuals in their recovery utilizing a 12-step model. These two houses welcomed Kristi as a volunteer therapist. Despite language barriers with some participants solely speaking Kiswahili, the men and women participated with openness each week in mindfulness training from a DBT perspective, eventually taking over the teaching and sharing with new participants.
Current research for Mindfulness practice in substance treatment is showing that this skill development can be highly advantageous in increasing the emotion regulation skills essential to relapse prevention. .

These functional brain scans show metabolic activity- red being most active and black as inactive. Taken while meditating, the increased neural firing, or increased brain activity can be seen.
Current research on mindfulness has found that mindfulness can cause the brain to change in very significant ways. Further imaging research has shown that mindfulness can alter the structure of the brain. For instance, cortical thinning, a natural occurrence associated with aging and dementia, is slowed when a mindfulness protocol is followed. The brain regions associated with attention, interoception and sensory processing were thicker in meditation participants than matched controls.
Studies have also found that people who use mindfulness have increased empathic awareness, a trait associated with emotional intelligence. These people have increased natural emotion regulation abilities over those who are not practicing mindfulness.
Several studies have found that after just eight weeks of mindfulness training, the areas of the brain associated with positive emotion are more active, and areas associated with anxiety are less active.

The mindfulness “what” skills are about what to do: “observe,” “describe,” and “participate.” The ultimate goal of this mindfulness skills practice is to develop a lifestyle of participating with awareness.

This workshop is intended for people interested in developing a personal mindfulness practice. The mindfulness skills illustrated in this workshop come from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT®), an empirically supported treatment created by Marsha Linehan for individuals with difficulties regulating emotions and impulsive behavior. Linehan translated the principles of Zen practice into a set of “what” and “how” skills.

These Mindfulness skills are at the core of DBT, every DBT skills group begins with mindfulness meditation. Every DBT skill taught depends on mindfulness. Often when trying to understand when something went wrong during your day or when something went right, mindfulness is implicated.

What does a treatment session with Sarah Dufresne look like?

Our lovely practitioner, Sarah Dufresne, is now offering Chinese + Japanese acupuncture for both adults and children. This experience with Sarah differs from our traditional acupuncture treatments in that she shares her wisdom and experience with Traditional Chinese and Japanese Medicine, Moxibustion, Ayurveda, Mindfulness Meditation, Energy Medicine & Nutrition. The treatments are geared toward helping you experience harmony within your body.

These custom sessions are rich with ways to encourage your body to operate at its optimal capacity. In addition to your acupuncture treatment, you may also experience adjuncts consisting of moxibustion, cupping, gua sha and tuina. We're beginning to feel the percolating energy of SPRING! In Chinese Medicine theory, every season relates to one of the 5 elements and specific organ systems - in the spring, the Wood element is most active and the liver and gallbladder are the organ systems that need the most care.

The liver and gallbladder pair are responsible for the smooth circulation of Qi, or energy, in the body. This time of year, there is more activity and growth in nature, and some themes you may see in your environment are fresh starts, rebirth, and renewal. You may feel more inspired to run a marathon, do a detox, start a new project, plant a garden, or spring clean the house - activities that show that your body's qi is responding to the energy of the season.

What is Thai Bodywork? ✨

Originating from the ancient healing traditions of Ayurveda and Thai Buddhism, Thai massage is a common treatment in Asia and is slowly being accepted and integrated into Western culture. Thai massage is the physical application of Metta, or loving-kindness, in which the practitioner gently moves the client in a series of dynamic, assisted stretches while compressing and massaging the muscles. The practitioner uses their whole body as leverage to move, rock and stretch the client.

Traditionally given on a floor mat with clients fully clothed, Thai massage is a whole-body treatment that involves working along the energy meridians. The focus is on opening energy blocks along the body promoting healing and relaxation. The art of Thai massage achieves a deep therapeutic effect without harsh physical force through efficient use of movement, conscious touch, breathing and rhythm. Sometimes nick-named, “Lazy Man’s yoga”, clients often feel like they completed a deep but gentle yoga class and received a massage at the same time.
