The first African American woman to complete a surgery residency at MUSC has returned to join the MUSC Health vascular surgery team. Welcome back Dr. Sharee Wright! Quick story about Dr. Wright...

When she was a resident and found out she would have to buy loupes (special magnifying glasses) in her second year, she didn't know how she could ask her mother for the money. “She was a single mom and money was tight,” she said. During her final year, she and her fellow graduates asked that their graduation gift go towards loupes for the incoming PGY-2 class. Since then, the Curtis P. Artz MUSC Surgical Society has provided loupes to all second-year residents as away to ease the financial burden. Thank you Dr. Wright!

Please join us on Friday, June 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the MUSC and Medical District Greenway. The MUSC Turning the Tide Violence Intervention Program (TTVIP) is hosting the event in honor of the national Wear Orange Day to bring awareness to the impact of firearm violence in our community and country. We are inviting survivors of violence, community members, and organizations that work in violence prevention and intervention to the event including law enforcement, elected leaders, grassroots organizations, healthcare providers, and other non-profits to honor survivors and bring attention to the important work of violence prevention, as firearm violence is one of the leading causes of death for those in the U.S. ages 44 and under, and is the leading cause of death for children and teens in the U.S.

We had a wonderful time celebrating our newly named endowed chairs on Thursday, April 21! Arman Kilic, M.D., Ravi Veeraswamy, M.D., Daniel P. Judge, M.D., Daniel H. Steinberg, M.D., Ryan J. Tedford, M.D., and Jeffrey R. Winterfield, M.D., all newly named endowed chairs in the divisions of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Cardiology were honored during the MUSC Department of Surgery and MUSC Health Heart & Vascular Center Endowed Chair Investiture Ceremony in the presence of nearly 100 family members, colleagues, leaders, and donors. The evening was a celebration of each honoree's significant contributions to their respective fields of cardiology and heart and vascular surgery and to the generous donors and Heart and Vascular Board members whose vision, support, and trust in our leadership determined our ability to establish these endowed chairs.

Keith Smalls has taken his heartbreaking life experiences and turned them into a force for good

“The penitentiary can either make you a better man or a better criminal. In that moment, I chose to be a better man." Keith Smalls

Read this inspiring story on one man's struggles, his triumphs and how - now - with his new job as a hospital violence prevention client advocate, he is changing the future for many young men who are victims of gun violence. In March, he spoke at the Charleston TEDx event, and earlier in April, he served as a keynote speaker for the 28th Annual Thomas A. Pitts Memorial Lectureship, which focuses on ethics in medicine – this year’s theme was gun violence and public health. And as long as people like Keith Smalls exist in this world, there will always be hope.

“The data shows that our survival rates and outcomes are much better than expected compared to national averages.”

The remarkable performance data is derived from a national benchmarking database, which describes itself as “the country’s leading health care performance improvement company.”

MUSC awarded $1M grant for community violence prevention program

MUSC Health’s Adult and Pediatric Level 1 Trauma Centers in Charleston saw a 30% increase in 2020 in firearm assaults and injuries. And the numbers have only continued to rise, said Ashley Hink, M.D., a trauma surgeon who also serves as medical director of MUSC’s Turning the Tide Violence Intervention Program. “MUSC and our team, we understand that we can’t just tackle this from within the health care system,” Green said. “There is a very significant portion of this work that has to be community-based and community-driven.” To that end, Hink led an effort that resulted in MUSC being awarded a three-year, almost $1 million grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention within the U.S. Department of Justice.

Melissa's Story

Melissa Mutz, 37, fought courageously for 20 years to make nurses and physicians believe her acute stomach pain was real. Not until spring 2019, when she was referred to MUSC Health GI Surgeon Katherine Morgan, did Mutz find an understanding care team and relief from the chronic hereditary pancreatitis that had claimed her mother's life when Mutz was 6. Mutz also singles out Dr. Eli Penn, an MUSC graduate practicing in Georgia, as part of that team.
