Yesterday, after 25 years, this $3.75 paperback of Pearl sold. The old Boomer's Books price code denotes August 1996, with initials of a former employee William I met only once.
Pearl is a lamentation for a lost child by an unnamed Chaucer contemporary. Marie Borroff, the translator, was Yale's first female professor of English when she joined the faculty in 1959. She had studied under Norman Maclean (A River Runs Through It) at the University of Chicago and became a friend and editor to him. Borroff is perhaps best known for her translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, basis for the new Dev Patel film. On a personal note, she was my professor in the early 90s; her class introduced me to the poetry of Kenneth Koch, whose book Rose, Where Did You Get That Red? introduced me to writing with kids...

Speaking of time -- here's a few recent acquisitions from the Time Reading Program. In 1962, Time Inc. republished about 100 titles, with fantastic modern cover art. They are actually "plastic-backs," the wraparound art is on stiff plastic boards. They were originally sold via mail-order or used as promotions for Time subscribers.

"Oh. Like in a hole?"
"Yes, but not a dry, bare hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat. It's a hobbit-hole."
"Hunh. What does that mean?"
"Well, it means comfort."
