🎉The Snail made it in one of our favorite magazines!🎉
Flip to the Due South section of the June/July issue of Garden & Gun Magazine and you’ll find The Snail in a roundup of indie bookstores that have figured out ways to flourish. Thank you to Mary Laura Philpott for this wonderful writeup—and the ongoing friendship! ❤️

“Okay, technically, you can’t visit the Snail on the Wall, because it’s a ‘bookstore without a store.’ But time your visit to Huntsville, Alabama, right, and you might catch some of its visiting author programs, held at venues around the city. My event this spring took place at the elegant Burritt on the Mountain, a historic mansion overlooking lush park grounds. A locally based online bookselling business seemed a farfetched idea when the Snail’s owner, Lady Smith, launched it in 2017, but Smith has since become Huntsville’s friendly neighborhood book supplier, offering both a book-ordering website and complimentary delivery to area doorsteps. Devotees of the Snail’s email newsletter use it as a shopping list, browsing reviews by Smith and a Readers Circle of book lovers. And how’s this for literary cred: The store is named for the thought-provoking little creature in Virginia Woolf’s story ‘The Mark on the Wall.’”

We are also big fans of the other bookstores featured here:
Parnassus Booksellers

Main Street Books
A Ca****la Books
East City Bookshop

The festival’s longest-running event exclusively devoted to fiction, Piccolo Fiction presents local and South Carolina authors reading brief short stories. This year’s reading will be in the courtyard beside Blue Bicycle Books, and, following tradition, each story will begin with the words “I ducked into the alley…”

Featured authors include: Paul Bowers, Melissa Falcon Field, Jonathan Sanchez, and Sean A. Scapellato.

The "Best of Charleston" Reader Picks happen but once a year, and I'm thrilled to win the title of "Best Local Author". THANK YOU!

It's an honor and privilege to continue to write books set against the backdrop of nature here in the Lowcountry. I've written novels featuring sweetgrass, dolphins, migratory birds, monarch butterflies, and-- my personal favorite-- loggerhead sea turtles.

Readers who know my books also know my heart for conservation, which is woven into the fabric of my stories. Thank you for reading my books and thank you for this honor of being Charleston's best local author.

Check out all of this year's winners in the latest issue of @Charleston City Paper, on newsstands now.

I want to give a special shout-out to some of my favorites who made the list. Congratulations to Blue Bicycle Books for being voted Best Bookstore and the @South Carolina Aquarium for being voted Best Attraction

Beethoven here 👋🏻 it’s taken me a few days to recover from my first weekend in Charleston 🎉 y’all (I’m learning the lingo quickly) sure know how to lay on that storied Southern hospitality 🍍

Thanks a bunch for the local recs - I decided to set out from my home base The Charleston Place to check out the sights along King Street. I’m more a tea drinker myself, but had to stop by The Harbinger to fuel up ☕️before venturing up to check out Blue Bicycle Books and see about lunch at Halls Chophouse 👀 I’ll return for this gospel brunch I’ve heard so much about.

Got a little winded and was feeling a bit flat outside of Hotel Bennett after stopping for a quick tipple at @camelliaschs 🥂so I hitched a ride from my main man Jeff with Charleston Bike Taxi to head up for a little shopping.

I know I’m a little hard of hearing these days, but the elegant ladies at the beautiful Hampden Clothing weren’t so talkative, and I headed up a little further to window shop Croghan's Jewel Box 👑

I certainly had to check out the local talent - shout out to Mr. Wooten on the keys - back at The Charleston Place before heading into The Thoroughbred Club for a quick nightcap 🍸

So many sights, bites, and friends made along the way. I think I’ll stay for a while! Hit the comment section below 👇🏻 for where I should head next as I eagerly await the CSO’s April 28th & 29th performance of my personal favorite 9th Symphony “An Ode to Joy” at the Gaillard Center 🎶 see y’all at the hall!
Following on from the success of Chasing Rainbows by D M Jones, Pegasus has now released the sequel Oceans Away.

BEST HALLOWEEN EVER! Drive-thru signing with Jeff Kinney at the James Island Library Oct. 31 -- get tickets here:

Yesterday, after 25 years, this $3.75 paperback of Pearl sold. The old Boomer's Books price code denotes August 1996, with initials of a former employee William I met only once.

Pearl is a lamentation for a lost child by an unnamed Chaucer contemporary. Marie Borroff, the translator, was Yale's first female professor of English when she joined the faculty in 1959. She had studied under Norman Maclean (A River Runs Through It) at the University of Chicago and became a friend and editor to him. Borroff is perhaps best known for her translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, basis for the new Dev Patel film. On a personal note, she was my professor in the early 90s; her class introduced me to the poetry of Kenneth Koch, whose book Rose, Where Did You Get That Red? introduced me to writing with kids...

I celebrate myself, and sing myself. Or to put it another way: I am Groot. Bookplate from a Modern Library edition of Leaves of Grass.

One year ago today we closed our doors for two months, our longest time shuttered in 25 years. We're open till 7:30 tonight though!

Speaking of time -- here's a few recent acquisitions from the Time Reading Program. In 1962, Time Inc. republished about 100 titles, with fantastic modern cover art. They are actually "plastic-backs," the wraparound art is on stiff plastic boards. They were originally sold via mail-order or used as promotions for Time subscribers.

"Hi, I'm looking for a gift for my friend. He lives, actually he lives in the ground."
"Oh. Like in a hole?"
"Yes, but not a dry, bare hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat. It's a hobbit-hole."
"Hunh. What does that mean?"
"Well, it means comfort."

Against the odds, our writing camps are off and running this year. Session 1, for grades 3 – 6, was in the airy and spacious sanctuary of Bright City Church — thank you to Nick and Jess Connolly for generously donating use of this space.

Thanks to author Brendan Reichs — who joined Session 2 via zoom and donated copies of his and Ally Condie’s awesome middle grade series The Darkdeep.

Margaret Stohl — video game and comic book writer / YALLFest co-founder / author of many books including the recent Jo and Laurie — will join this week!

Space available in most sessions. For more information see, and please call Jonathan any time at 843-323-2834, he’s always happy to talk about camp!
