Life can suck sometimes. Here's some helpful tips for getting through it! 08/28/2018

Just as the title says... life CAN suck sometimes! Taking a second to acknowledge the suckiness, accept the suckiness, and then be kind to yourself in the process... well it makes things a bit more bearable.

You've got life handled, so you'll solve the next problem that comes your way. But give yourself permission to feel the distress. It's okay. And be nice to yourself.

You Are More Than What You Can Produce: Productivity Doesn't Equal Self-Worth | Therapy | South Carolina | Shifting Tides Therapeutic Solutions 08/21/2018

My latest blog post touches on something incredibly relatable and normal.

We place our self-worth on the things we can produce. The job we have. The money we make. The cake you bring to every party. The amount of hours you clean the house. The ability to multitask. And so on.

Those things mentioned above DO NOT equate to your self-worth.

Read my newest post about self-worth.

Spoiler alert: you are enough.

Oh it just gives me goose bumps thinking about it. When an "a-ha" moment occurs, it means, a) I clearly am su

What is a healthy personal value system? This is a clear classification of principles that guide your behavior and keep your life on the right track - Thriveworks 08/17/2018

What a great concept to have contributed to! This article is a nice, brief read that outlines why it's so important that we have a stable value system.

Our own personal values keep us within boundaries that we feel good about. Living by your value system feels congruent and comfortable. You set these "rules" for yourself and how awesome is that?! You get to live a life you feel content about.

The moment we go against our core values, we immediately feel that twinge of confusion or guilt or being unsettled.

Or maybe you struggle with what your value system even is! Maybe it started based upon your family's values, but that system doesn't seem to fit in your adulthood. That's normal. But difficult to navigate. Let me assist in that! Check out my website and see what you think!

We can work towards having a more solid value system that feels stable and good!

What It's Like To Be A Woman 'In-Between' 08/08/2018

THIS is important.

This article speaks to so many women out there who are just trying to figure life out. Women who have parts of themselves squared away and yet feel like a total s**t show in other areas.

We all know these women. We are these women. The women who try and try, and still feel like they aren't getting anywhere.

This article is for you, the woman who is trying hard at life but seems to be faltering.

Here's the truth. You're not faltering. You're doing great. You're amazing and you have so many women who can relate. You are complex, unique, and talented.

4 Types of Boundaries And Why You 100% Need Them In Your Life Starting NOW | Therapy | South Carolina | Shifting Tides Therapeutic Solutions 08/02/2018

I bet quite a few people can relate to my latest blog post.

We've all been told, "you need to set better boundaries!" But what the heck does that even mean?

Take a couple minutes to look over the 4 types of boundaries (spoiler: physical, mental, emotional, material) and perhaps assess what your current boundaries are.

Often, if you're feeling resentful or bitter about something... most likely you have a boundary or two (or twelve) that have been crossed and you're not saying anything about it. And so the boundary continues to be crossed and you continue to be pi**ed forever and ever.

Okay well let's stop that Resentment Train and set some clear boundaries in your life, communicating to yourself and the people around you what goes and what doesn't.

Boundaries still seem like a struggle or you feel like an as***le setting them? Contact me and we can figure it out!

Ah the famous therapy couch. I have clients ask me, “so should I lay down?” and most of the time it’s jokingly and a way to break the tension. Most people sit these days, but I’ve had a few people lay down. Mostly tired moms who need a moment to rest their tired bones... go for it momma! This is your time. ••
So what types of people have sat across from me on this couch?
• anxious college student looking to not be so fearful of normal college activities
• tired and guilt-ridden Mom who doesn’t take care of herself and feels guilty the rare time she does
• woman who sees herself absorbing everyone else’s feelings and issues, putting their needs in front of her own, and ultimately fracturing the relationships she has a death grip on
• person who grapples with their sexual identity and needs to process how they feel about it and also how the people around them feel about it
• woman who grew up in a dysfunctional household and finds herself searching for approval anywhere she can find it, except within herself
• person who has gone through a break-up that has them feeling shattered
• someone who excelled in school, but upon entering the “real world,” has zero idea where to go and what to do
• woman with some depressive moments that lead to distressing thoughts of wishing she wasn’t here anymore
• woman grieving the loss of a major figure in their life and learning how to function
••
This couch has seen and heard a lot of sadness, confusion, helplessness, anger, fear, exhaustion, and self-deprecation. It’s also experienced joy, laughter, relief, clarity, calmness, contentment, realization, and resilience. ••
Think of how you’re doing and what you need. There’s a therapy couch out there for you!

How being specific with your emotions helps you and everyone around you! 07/12/2018

Remember that one time I tried something new (blogging) and literally blogged about trying something new and the anxiety that came with it? Yeah.
Well here's something else new! A video blog! A vlog! A whatever the hell it is!
This video takes a look at being able to accurately identify how you feel and how to use that knowledge to problem solve on your own, but also how to communicate how you feel with the people around you. This allows THEM to ALSO problem solve. Imagine it... you being able to be specific with your feelings and then everyone is better off for it. Sounds good to me!
If you want to check out my latest blog post (which is literally just this video plus a few typed words describing the video...) there's a link to a pretty good list of feeling words to look through and start from.

Being happy has nothing to do with money (or drugs) | Nick Offerman 07/10/2018

A client shared this video with me and I am in love with it! First off, it's Ron Swanson (well Nick Offerman, but same thing) who is just fantastic, but his message is such a needed reminder for us all.

Perfection isn't attainable people! It just isn't. It never will be. You will drive yourself into the ground attempting to find something that is not out there.

But betterment and continued growth towards your best self? Now that's a journey that means something. That's a golden thread throughout your life that will continue to bring you knowledge, growth, success, and contentment.

I challenge you to watch this video and take a look at how you approach your life. Are you setting insanely high expectations for yourself to be perfection and end up feeling let down and depressed? Perhaps... just perhaps... look at the value of seeking to be generally better and forward moving while honoring and using those missteps along the way as stepping stones of even further growth. It all works together nicely :)

Now if you're having a rough time with this thought shift and just continue to struggle with seeking perfection, let's set up an appointment! You can even book online through my website. Easy peasy.

Just a little creative self-care.
And redefining the rules. Leaves don’t have to be green. Flowers can be mismatched and whatever colors I want.
This is my canvas and my colors to work with versus needing to color things how they “should” be.
Often we live our lives by rules and how things “should” be. Who sets those rules? You? Family? Culture?
Do these rules make you happy? I encourage you to challenge the rules.
Maybe some days the leaves just need to be pink and blue, not green.

Let’s play... WHATS ON THAT BOARD??? (Thanks to Fourteen & East for the board 💕)
Acceptance doesn’t mean you have to like it!
It merely means you acknowledge what’s in front of you, positive or negative, and stop playing the denial game. Nothing changes if you don’t accept and acknowledge what’s even going on. Accepting something means it CAN change. Not accepting something doesn’t even give problem solving a chance. We often deny that parts of ourselves (our thoughts, feelings, behaviors) are even there. Well, they are and they impact your world. Take a moment to accept and acknowledge.
Then call me to help problem solve! 😜

How to get mental health treatment if you can't afford it 06/06/2018

With the recent sad news of Kate Spade’s su***de, the continued discussion of mental health is so important. Affordability and access to mental health often keep people from the care they need.

Take a look at this article, where I contribute, for ways to find mental health care that’s affordable for you. In my case, although I’m not accepting insurance, this does allow room to discuss your financial needs and how I can work with you. Ask therapists what they can offer. Sliding scale? Pro bono? Referral to someone who does?

There are resources for you... it may take some digging, but your mental health and well-being is worth it.

Feel free to contact me or visit my site for more information.
