Atkinson Contributes to CCB’s “Beatles Ballet"

On Saturday, February 2nd James Atkinson, Associate Professor of Dance, Alabama State University, and former soloist with the Columbia City Ballet (CCB), returns to join the distinguished lineup of choreographers assembled by William Starrett, CCB’s Executive & Artistic Director, providing works for the Company’s World Premiere production Beatles The Ballet.

Conceived by Mr. Starrett, this multimedia presentation will feature 35 songs from the Beatles’ song book, following the group’s development from their early beginnings in 1960’s through their breakup in April 1970.

Atkinson’s impressive contribution to the production is a series of three, high-energy ballets created as a triad. These works employ Atkinson’s unique movement style which offers a visual reflection mediated through the lexicon of classical ballet, celebrating one of the most crucial decades in America’s social development.

In its concept, the program presents the Beatles music as a means by which to introduce 21st century audiences to the artistry of the swinging sixties and mellow seventies. The Beatles, whose popularity has extended beyond the life of the group as the original “Boy Band” were brilliant at synthesizing musical genres found specifically in American culture.

There is no denying the Beatles melodic rhythms, and powerful lyrics, coupled with their unique harmonic structures, are based on American classical jazz, R&B, Country and folk music. Throughout the Band’s repertoire can be found the pervasive influences of Jazz masters like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and others, along with the performance stylings of Little Richard to include aspects of gospel and the energy of Black American Soul. The combining of all these genres to create a cohesive whole helped the Beatles bring about a hugely inclusive lyrical poetry which resulted in establishing a distillation of the “Love” era, and an extension of the “Age of Aquarius.”

Atkinson, like his fonts of inspiration, integrates ideas from multiple sources, including the movement elements of jazz, modern, and social dance, into the art of classical ballet to create original works that reinterpret vernacular dance forms into a joyous, coherent, artistic expression. Atkinson gratefully acknowledges that he was challenged by Mr. Starrett to use the well-known Beatle anthems, “Hard Day’s Night,” “Ticket to Ride,” and “Twist-n-Shout” to visually articulate the movement of this unique cultural integration of musical sources.

Atkinson shares that his contribution to this collaborative effort pays homage to another mentor, the late Skipp Pearson, a Jazz icon and South Carolina’s official ambassador of Jazz Music. Early on in their friendship, Ambassador Pearson made Atkinson aware that he had played with the Beatles in London, England before the group had achieved their status as mavens of global cultural expression.

Atkinson’s contribution to CCB’s production helps him to come full circle. Returning to the City of Columbia, considered his second home, Atkinson seizes the opportunity to model the multiple levels of cultural awareness, inspired over the years by Pearson, into his ballets. As an homage to Pearson, Atkinson is thrilled to have this chance to present to Columbia audiences the ideal of well-integrated cultural synthesis, which was always an important part of Pearson’s work as a music educator.

It is important to note that Mr. Starrett was inspired to create the ballet through reflection upon the wide variety of music the Beatles recorded in such a relatively short span of time. In addition, further inspiration arises from the fact that many of the issues the Beatles addressed in their work, continue to be current topics in our national conversation. Always searching for ways to broaden the ballet audience while keeping the art current, Starrett feels the inspiration and influence the Beatles continue to have on subsequent generations is the perfect catalyst for inspiring a new generation of audience members.

William Starrett’s The Beatles Ballet is expected to generate considerable excitement and interest through promotional activities designed to enhance the performance experience.

The 1960’s can’t be revisited without attention to the fashions created specifically for that period. The consummate showman, Starrett invites attending patrons to dress in their grooviest sixties looks.
