Moving your body is one of the best things you can do to boost your mood, especially during the long and dreary winter months. When you engage in just 20 to 30 minutes of physical activity each day, your brain releases endorphins, otherwise known as the happy hormone. Endorphins have been proven to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety while also relaxing the body and reducing stress.

The old saying, "No pain no gain" is false when it comes to physical therapy! Many people avoid starting therapy due to fears of treatment being painful or thinking they must suffer to get results. However, a physical therapist's goal is to focus on your current state of pain and movement abilities to create a treatment plan that gets you back to feeling your best!

It can be easy to push your back aches and pains to the side, hoping they will ease in the future. However, studies from May 2020 in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, October 2015 in JAMA, and July 2020 from The Mental Health Clinician reveal how important it is to seek treatment as soon as you begin noticing pain.

The studies show that those who choose physical therapy as a form of low back pain treatment earlier than later see better results over time than patients who put their treatment on hold for a later date. They also unveiled that patients attending physical therapy at the onset of pain ultimately used less pain medication throughout the healing and therapy process.

Physical therapy is a proven effective treatment strategy for those dealing with low back pain. Treatments often include correcting posture, improving core strength and stability, and improving hip mobility. Don't wait any longer to feel better!

General weakness is a common complaint among the elderly, but it is also seen in younger individuals who have undergone surgery, experienced trauma, are dealing with a disease or chronic pain, or must maintain prolonged periods of bed rest. Patients that come into the clinic experiencing general weakness often express how difficult it is to perform normal activities of daily living such as cooking, cleaning, or self-care routines.

A physical therapist will use a variety of therapies to combat general weakness such as incorporating flexibility, endurance, balance, and aerobic exercises into therapy sessions. Patients are also educated on proper home modifications and activities they can do to further their progress.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), around 1.6 million to 3.8 million people in the United States suffer from concussions each year. Sports and recreational activities pose a greater threat, but concussions can happen to anyone and are also common after falls and motor vehicle accidents.

Physical Therapists are trained in concussion rehabilitation and use a variety of therapies to create a customized plan that fits your needs. Rehabilitation may consist of manual therapy to reduce neck pain and headaches, vestibular rehab to reduce dizziness and improve gaze stabilization, and balance and agility training.

December brings us holidays, and with it comes wintry weather. Every year in our clinics, we encounter patients who have fallen while walking on the snow and ice. Their injuries range from minor sprains and strains to fractures, which occasionally require surgery. The incidence of falls often is higher in the elderly. Statistics show that about one-third of the elderly population over 65 falls each year.

To prevent slips and falls this winter:

1) Take your time to get to your destination
2) Wear footwear with rubber soles to help provide better traction
3) Take small steps to maintain your center of balance
4) Avoid carrying heavy bags, especially on steps. Having both hands free helps to maintain balance
5) Hold onto the car for support when getting in or out
