The Robert Lunz Group South Carolina Chapter Sierra Club presents: Understanding Heat Risk in Charleston, on Thursday, April 7, at 7pm via Zoom!

Speakers include: Janice Barnes, Founder, Climate Adaptation Partners;
Dr. Jerry Reves, MUSC Health
Dr. Kirstin Dow, USC; and Dr. Chip Konrad, UNC-Chapel Hill
Scott Curtis, The Citadel
Casey Conrad, City of Charleston, SC Government GIS team
Susan Johnson, MUSC Office of Health Promotion

Beginning in 2020, the Charleston Medical District (CMD), Climate Adaptation Partners (CAP), and the Carolinas Integrated Sciences Assessment (CISA) team along with many local partners, collaborated on an integrated heat research program, a growing focus across the southeast. In a city where chronic flooding plagues neighborhoods, and where it has always been hot, drawing attention to increases in extreme heat and associated health implications is a relatively new effort, and one that requires new types of collaborations in order to be effective. Speakers at this event will share the research results from a pilot program of biometric monitoring of outdoor workers and wet bulb globe temperature sampling in the Charleston Medical District and the Citadel, and citywide sampling of heat data from the NOAA-funded National Integrated Heat Health Information System. Discussion will center on community feedback on ways to better integrate heat risk into local planning and investments and opportunities for communities and organizations across the state to address this growing health hazard.

The meal – Local, soft-boiled eggs on homemade toasted multigrain bread with a local samphire salad (a.k.a. Charleston Sea Beans) both covered in a fresh green garlic dressing.

What is samphire?
I hadn’t heard of it either. Samphire (a.k.a. sea beans and sea pickles,) is a salt-tolerant, marsh dwelling plant. These ‘sea beans’ are grown locally by Heron Farms with the aim to use sea-level rise as a resource for a new type of agriculture. Heron Farms also uses the sale of their product to fund coastal restoration projects in coastal SC!
