Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park

Tours to Fort Sumter will resume for eight days beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, January 15 and continuing through Tuesday, January 22. The park concessionaire, Fort Sumter Tours, has reached an agreement with the National Park Service to fund this reopening, which also includes the Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center in Liberty Square. Tours will depart daily from both Liberty Square and Patriots Point.
Questions about the tours can be answered by NPS staff at the visitor center @ 843-577-0242.
Fort Moultrie, the Fort Moultrie Visitor Center, and Charles Pinckney National Historic Site remain closed

Even when it’s raining outside, there is still much to see and do inside the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum. The Apollo 8 exhibit is located onboard the USS Yorktown in Hangar Bay 1.

There you can climb into the capsule and feel what it felt like to be an astronaut in 1969. In addition to takeoff and a trip around the moon, the Apollo 8 capsule also simulates what it was like to travel back to Earth. You’ll feel and hear a splash as you drop into the Pacific Ocean. Rare images taken by NASA as the USS YORKTOWN recovered the awaiting space crew in July 1969 can be viewed at this exhibit as well.

#ThrowbackThursday Third Fleet aircraft carriers at anchor in Ulithi Atoll, 8 December 1944, during a break from operations in the Philippines area. The picture below was originally captioned “Murderers’ Row” after the destruction of the Japanese Navy by American naval forces at the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944 and Leyte Gulf in October 1944. Does anyone know which carrier is the USS Yorktown? Bonus points if you can name all of the mighty ships in the row!
