From PBS DCIC: How to Avoid Making Microaggressions ⬇️🤔

The PBS Corp Diversity, Culture, and Inclusion Committee (DCIC) supports the development of programs and resources for underrepresented groups.

"Microaggressions are verbal, non-verbal and environmental slights, snubs and insults which communicate hostile, derogatory or negative messages and behaviors that target a person based on their protected characteristic or belonging to a marginalized group." (Source: Royal Pharmaceutical Society)

1. Be observant: Adapt and be sensitive to how each individual receives or interprets certain words/topics.

2. Stay up-to-date on currently accepted terminology by people in the referenced community.

3. Remember that Autism is a spectrum and perspectives and experiences vary.

Let's strive for understanding and continual growth together. Stay tuned for more insights from PBS DCIC on navigating microaggressions.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

The PBS Ethics Committee reminds you to encourage self-care practices among your teams and families to prevent burnout and promote mental health.

Remember to adjust your self-care practices based on setting events going on in our lives. Sometimes this could be as simple as having snacks with you so you don't forget to eat, or meditating for 3 minutes. These little steps of self-care go a long way. Think of behavior momentum!

Meet TANYA, PBS Eastern Mass RC 👏🥳

This month we're highlighting that continue to improve the lives of families we serve in numerous ways.

Tanya is our Regional Coordinator for our Team PBS Eastern Massachusetts region and has been with our team for 3 years! Tanya has been driving support in growing our Eastern Massachusetts team to provide ABA services for more families across her region while cultivating a unique culture for her behavior assistants, RBTs, and behavior analysts where they can grow and learn together as a team.

When asked what inspired her to pursue a career in behavior analysis, Tanya says “The desire to teach, guide, and provide support to parents with children with Autism. As well as enter a field where speaking a second language would help support so many families!” Tanya would like to further her education within the field of ABA, learning and improving her own competency daily. She would like to contribute to the ABA field by publishing articles, and other work related to the population we service. She notes that teaching others is her passion!

We're so inspired by our team and cannot wait to see how Tanya continues to make an impact across Eastern Massachusetts for both families and staff.

Continue to follow along as we highlight all month long!

Dr. Shane Spiker reminds us to begin having nuanced discussions about dilemmas.

He notes that being able to bring up a scenario, add context, then describe the nuances of any given circumstance produces some of the most unique and passionate verbal behavior our field has to offer.

How can these conversations help to prepare us?! Dr. Shane Spiker writes that discussing ethics in safe spaces can allow us to think more critically about the circumstances that lead to dilemmas. It also allows us to explore possible solutions without risk of harm to those involved.

Name a better trio... we'll wait 🤫

RBTs are the backbone of what we do through implementing behavior plans, collecting data, and ensuring consistency in interventions for the families we serve.

They work 1:1 with clients each week and are skilled in data collection. This data is then analyzed by BCBAs to assess progress and make any necessary adjustments to the intervention.

We 💙 our RBTs at PBS! Give a shoutout to an RBT you appreciate below! 👇

Have you considered ALL factors as a provider?

When choosing and applying ABA treatments to individuals with neurodevelopmental differences, consider any factors you cannot see that may be affecting them. Collaborate with other professionals outside the field to get a well-rounded view of barriers to progress.

How often do you collaborate with outside professionals?

Meet DESIRAE, PBS Palm Beach RC 🤩🌴

This month we're highlighting that continue to improve the lives of families we serve in numerous ways.

Desirae is our Regional Coordinator for our Team PBS Palm Beach region and has been with PBS for 16 (SIXTEEN!) years! 🙌

Desirae has been a huge support for our team since the very beginning, and we're so thankful to have her on our team. She shares how she began her journey into the ABA field:

"I was inspired to pursue a career in behavior analysis after teaching in an ASD program for kindergarten - 2nd grade and having a county BCBA join my classroom. She supported me with some of the behaviors my students were exhibiting. Having her support and seeing how she could change the dynamic of my classroom while also increasing the quality of socialization and education my students were getting inspired me to pursue my master's degree in ABA."

We're so inspired by our team and cannot wait to see how Desirae continues to make an impact across her region.

Whether you're new to the ABA field or have been supporting families for 10+ years, you can always make an impact in a family's life.
