As a Rolfer I’ve found it sometimes easier and more effective to teach people how to work on themselves in these hard to reach places through Rolf Movement. The best tool in anyone’s box is self-awareness.

With this 30 day hamstring focus I’ve seen a lot of progress. Even on the days where I’m feeling a bit tired still finding ways to now get elbows to toes every session.

With this new assist by @bendystrong at @gravityfitnesschs I think elbows to toes on flat floor may actually be a possibility, if I don’t get heat to toe first.

We don’t focus too much on poses at Gravity, we focus on the things that allows us to posture and move in the ways we want (e.g. hamstrings, knee joints, thoracic spine, glutes, etc). After years of this type of focus on mobility we find it enjoyable to revisit activities requiring a certain amount of mobility and it’s pretty fun when we do.

I haven’t tried deep sissy squats since August due to an injury at my big toe. I really just had to stop loading my toes for a while and wait for things to get better. Didn’t mean I’d stop from ever loading that toe again. Just little bits at a time to what was tolerable throughout the day. That in combination with regular self-Rolfing and rest from those drills in my program that require strong big toes allowed me to get back up to speed. It didn’t come quickly but it came when it was ready and now I feel almost no pain loading it. The body’s capacity to heal never ceases to amaze me.

Skin the Cat is not an easy one but a great skill builder and conditioning exercise for all things shoulder. Practicing on rings offers more opportunity to work on asymmetries and various lines of restriction.

Here’s a quick routine we use for many calisthenics workouts involving leg raises, levers, dips, muscle ups, etc.

Five sets as part of your warm up with 3 solid reps practicing different grip positions. You’ll find out quickly where you’re strongest and weakest.

A topic was brought up in a recent conversation on the usefulness of isolated external/internal rotations for the shoulder joint. As injury rehab they are “go-to” motions and as a training tools for healthy shoulders they should remain “go-tos.” There are many ways to go about doing them however and I found this one to be effective for putting the shoulders in a better position for both pulls and presses.

By using a resistance band to guide your shoulder into a stretch there is constant feedback from the receptors in your shoulder joint which help to wake it up at uncommon ranges.

Practicing internal rotation while being actively pulled into an end range of external rotation helps to train the internal rotators while keeping the shoulders open. This in turn creates more space for exercises such as pull-ups which require open shoulders yet also ask for activity from strong internal rotators of the shoulder such as the latissimus dorsi.

This is just a simple before and after clip of me doing this movement in between two sets of three pull-ups. The difference is incredible and the effort doesn’t feel like it changes. Thank you TheraBands! @theraband

The Story

The only constant is change. Though we may agree with this truth we often find ourselves resisting change in both our minds and bodies which are inherently tied in with our parts of ourselves. Resistance develops through such things as injury, habits, beliefs, norms, models, and other forms of behavioral and environmental adaptations. I was enlightened to these challenges early on and found the capacity to alter my resistance through practices focused on promoting movement and mindfulness. Initially this started as a teenager with martial arts, weightlifting, and meditation. Practices which shifted my perspective on my life’s potential and opened up paths towards other practices such as massage therapy, yoga therapy, and structural integration.​

There’s been a long time of me wearing many different hats in health and wellness starting with personal training in 2005, adding on massage therapy in 2007, and wearing the hat of yoga instructor starting in 2013. In 2016 I decided to consolidate my hats into one by diving headfirst into my practice in 2016 after becoming a Certified Rolfer. This practice has given me the space and freedom to utilize a wide variety of skills and experience while wearing just one outfit. As that outfit became more adaptable I began to truly appreciate the holistic effects of what we do in the business of health promotion. This awareness continues to lead me towards further training and education.

With each year that passes and each human being that I help there is so much palpable change in both my visitors as well as myself. My purpose is to help continue sharing the benefits of structural integration and movement based therapies. I believe this requires being always open to shifting my own perspective on how to help support optimal movement, radiant health, and purpose driven lives.
