Marlee Matlin, Shoshannah Stern on ASL Inclusivity of New Doc 06/17/2025

A fun moment on the "Today" show with Marlee Matlin and Shoshannah Stern discussing their new documentary, "Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore." In the segment, NCI even got a shoutout for our role in captioning history, a reminder of how far we’ve come and how much work remains.

The film is centered on Marlee, the first Deaf actor to win an Oscar, and reflects on her life in her primary language of American Sign Language. NCI provided the audio description for the documentary, helping ensure accessibility extends to blind and low-vision audiences as well.

Thanks to Marlee and Shoshannah for continuing to amplify the importance of accessibility!

Subtitling Your Life 05/05/2025

The April 28, 2025 issue of The New Yorker featured an essay by David Owen titled "Subtitling Your Life." NCI's President and Chief Operating Officer, Meredith Patterson, provided the author with an overview of the history of captioning, the uniqueness of the voice writing process, and the industry trend toward automation during COVID as the demand for captioning rose.

This article explores how advancements in speech-to-text technology are transforming communications for the Deaf community and those with hearing loss. It highlights how modern captioning tools are bridging communication gaps and enhancing autonomy for some while also addressing the historical marginalization of the Deaf community and cultural resistance to technological solutions.

Subtitling Your Life Hearing aids and cochlear implants have been getting better for years, but a new type of device—eyeglasses that display real-time speech transcription on their lenses—is a game-changing breakthrough.
