Flooring Fact! Area rugs are a beautiful addition to any space, but keep this in mind: be careful putting an area rug on hardwood flooring in an area where it gets regular, direct sunlight. Here are two things that could happen:

1. The dye on the fibers of the area rug will begin to fade where the sun is regularly shining on it.
2. The hardwood underneath the area rug will remain in perfect condition, while the surrounding areas of hardwood will begin to fade, resulting in a distinct outline of the rug if it is ever removed from the space.

Here are some solutions to avoid this from happening in your home:

1. Install blinds or curtains on your windows and have them drawn when the sun is directly shining on your floors.
2. Rotate your rug regularly to keep the colors from fading unevenly.
3. If there is a distinct outline on your hardwood floors already, in most cases you can have them sanded and refinished to immediately remedy the issue - or in some cases, leaving all of the flooring exposed to the sun can result in them evening out naturally.
