Outdoor activities have many benefits for our individuals ranging from multi-sensory stimulation, enhancing social/behavioral, emotional, cognitive functions, as well as encompassing gross and fine motor skills.

Every spring, college hires from Freddie Mac join us for a large volunteer project helping to promote team building and service to our community. This year, 25 volunteers came out to Minerva Fisher in Vienna to help with various projects from gardening, painting, and beautifying their outdoor space. Members of this cohort rightfully earned their green thumb with this project, planting fruits and vegetables like corn, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and squash.

“The vegetable gardens are a huge part of our program—they give individuals a chance to connect with nature, learn responsibility, and take pride in nurturing something from small plant to harvest.
