Our virtual Lunch & Learn hosted by the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce was all about Passwords! Managed IT Supervisor Ryan Malmstedt shared key points on:

- Passwords protect your electronic accounts and devices from unauthorized access, keeping your sensitive personal information safe.

- Maintaining strong passwords calls for using longer, more complex ones – at least 12 characters consisting of both upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.

- Password managers are apps that enable you to safely store and access dozens of passwords. ​A few options are Bitwarden, 1Password, NordPass, LastPass and Keeper Security, Inc.

- Two-factor authentication (2FA) and Multi-factor authentication (MFA) provide an added layer of security by requiring additional factors to identify a user.

- Frequent password changes are highly recommended, ideally every 90 days.

Multi-factor authentication fatigue attacks? "As employees try to access work applications, they are often prompted to verify their identity in some way established by the IT security team. This typically involves notifications to their smartphones. Attackers are now spamming employees with compromised credentials with MFA authorization requests – sometimes dozens of times in an hour – until they get so irritated that they approve the request using their authentication apps."
