Everyone deserves respect. No one needs to provide they are worthy, or prove their worth to anyone in order to receive some common decency. This applies to all sorts of situations, whether it’s begging someone to stay in a relationship, trying to prove you “deserve” some self-care time, having to prove one’s self to peers through sports before “earning” common respect in the hallway, needing to attend a certain school etc. Teach our children better by showing it first… and helping them to see that it’s ok to be nice to someone who disagrees with you or has different viewpoints with you. And if you’re not quite certain how, or not sure how this works in your life, therapy can help. Toxic relationships often breed a power differential and the feeling that someone needs to prove themselves to others.

It’s all about perspective.
