Santa Fe IC - Quint 127 was initially dispatched to a vehicle fire at the CalTrans yard on Santa Fe Ave, on the far east side of their district. En route “LA” advised them of a yard fire at the location and the assignment balanced to a commercial fire response. Quint 127 arrived to find a large outdoor fire in the back of a yard, an approximately 20x20 spot. After making access, Engine 236 established a water supply for the quint and deployed additional hand lines from their engine. Foam 127 (using Foam 1) moved into position to use their monitors to douse the pile of foliage and the adjacent roll-off dumpster’s content that caught fire. Engine 105 pumped Foam 127 from a hydrant across the street since the foam has no pumping capability. Crews not on hose lines or monitors used rubbish hooks to separate the pile and access hot spots. Knockdown was called about an hour after the incident was dispatched. Great work by the crews of Battalion 7!

Metropole IC - Tuesday April 21st, Battalion 14 activated a modified Catalina Plan, for possibly the first time, in response to a structure fire on the island. Avalon Fire Department personnel responded with LACoFD Station 55 & Baywatch Avalon to a working fire in the city of Avalon, command requested two additional engine companies to assist with overhaul and to backfill stations to Battalion 14 who notified “LA” for copters, heli-tenders, Baywatch boats & Marine Battalion 100 to coordinate and facilitate the response.

A logistical challenge is created when additional resources are requested to Catalina Island (approximately 22 miles off the coast), crews must be flown from the mainland to the island for immediate needs but for larger scale or prolonged incidents require crews and apparatus respond on barges from the Port of Los Angeles.

In response to the Metropole Incident, Copter 12 flew Engine 56’s crew, Copter 22 flew Engine 2’s crew, with Engine 106 as a landing zone coordinator at Heli-spot 53A. Battalion 14 acted as mainland Liason for Metropole IC. Baywatch Cabrillo staged mid-channel for RIC in support of Air Ops. Lifeguard Marine Battalion 100 coordinated the move ups for the Baywatch boats for coverage. This unified effort from Avalon fire, LASD Avalon Dispatch, LACoFD Dispatch, Battalion 14 units, Air Ops, and lifeguards demonstrated their proficiency and effectiveness to respond to any contingency! Excellent job by all involved!
