Today in 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed what became known as the “G.I. Bill.” or the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act. The American Legion fought for provisions that included returning servicemen access to unemployment compensation, low-interest home and business loans, and funding for education.
Black golf professional William Powell of East Canton, Ohio, a D-Day Army Technical Sergeant, was denied access to a business loan to build a public golf course. Two years later, and backed by loans from two area physicians, Powell designed, built, owned and operated Clearview Golf Club. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Cherish your father on Father’s Day and every day. If not for my father I doubt that I would have ever picked up a golf club!
I feel so fortunate to have had my father in my life until the last day of 2009. He is truly missed, which is why I continue to focus on his “Legacy.”
