Day “off” Rant

Owning your own business may seem like a dream to many people, but let me give you a glimpse of what it’s really like.

A customer contacted us at the last minute, desperately needing an emergency tent rental. Unfortunately, we were already completely booked for their date. After several conversations, we decided to go above and beyond to help. We purchased brand-new tents specifically so we could accommodate their event on short notice.

Then, less than 48 hours before the event, the customer contacted us to cancel because there was a 40% chance of rain in the forecast. They demanded a full refund.

As with most event rental companies, our policy offers alternatives such as a partial refund, a credit toward a future rental, or rescheduling when possible. Instead, we were told a story about financial hardship and accused of “cheating” them out of their money.

To make matters worse, the customer filed a dispute with their credit card company, claiming we never intended to provide the service they paid for.

The result? Our payment processor immediately froze our account for up to three months, withdrew the disputed funds, charged us a hefty dispute fee, and now we’re forced to fight the claim ourselves. We’ve been told the process could take up to a year before it’s resolved.

We did everything we could to help someone in a last-minute situation, and instead we’re left feeling like we’re the ones being treated as criminals.

To everyone chasing the American Dream: owning a business can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s also filled with moments like these. You invest your time, money, and energy to help people, and occasionally you’ll encounter someone who feels entitled to ignore your policies and shift the consequences onto you.

We’ll keep doing what’s right, standing behind our policies, and taking care of the customers who appreciate the effort. But experiences like this are a reminder that running a small business isn’t always the dream people imagine—sometimes it’s one of the toughest jobs you’ll ever have

What an incredible day! There are so many people to thank for making this event such a success.

First, thank you to Petrolia Borough and Petrolia Community Park for allowing us to host this event at such a great facility.

To my amazing staff—thank you for donating countless hours of your time to make this event happen. Your hard work behind the scenes never goes unnoticed.

Most importantly, thank you to every member of our community who came out, supported the event, and spent the day with us. Seeing families, friends, and neighbors enjoying themselves is what it’s all about.

Events like this require months of planning and countless hours of work. This time of year is already our busiest season, and organizing an event of this size means even more time away from home.

Because of that, I would be remiss if I didn’t give a very special thank you to my wife. Thank you for carrying the load at home, and supporting me while I continue doing what I love.
