Beekeeping in 1925: when pipe smoking wasn’t just a vibe—it was a tool. Back then, the pipe served a dual purpose: calming hives and looking undeniably manly. Here’s the science: when bees smell smoke—pipe to***co or otherwise—they think their hive is in danger of burning. Their survival instinct kicks in, and they chow down on honey to prepare for evacuation. A full bee is a calm bee, and that meant fewer stings and easier honey collection. But let’s get specific about pipe smoke. To***co wasn’t ideal for bees’ respiratory systems (yes, bees have tiny tracheal systems that can be irritated by harsh smoke). Plus, depending on the pipe blend, it could leave a lingering scent in the hive. Ever had honey with a hint of Virginia blend? Probably not, but it could’ve been a thing. These days, we’ve swapped pipes for dedicated smokers with natural fuel, and bees everywhere are grateful. But shoutout to those 1925 beekeepers—pioneers of practicality and unintentional multitasking!
