An old friend and classmate reminded me last night that I did magic shows at school. Do you know how hard that was for this introvert? Very. But I loved magic.
My parents would get away to Minneapolis for weekends once in a while. The fridge stocked with Swanson’s Pot Pies, still my favorite comfort food. There was a magic shop near where they would stay. Eagle Magic, the stuff of this boy’s dreams. They had a catalog that I would lust after. I would wear out that catalog trying to decide how best to part with my allowance, giving my parents clear directions on what to buy, including backup options. They would return from their retreat weekends with new tricks to add to my magic kit, this cool old wooden box with a drop down lid and two drawers with compartments. I believe it had been made to hold old TV repair parts like “tubes”, which my dad used to make money in his early days. There were even two clips in the lid which perfectly held my magic wand, which featured a device that would make it rise up in my hand like it was levitating. And it was hollow so you could stuff “silks”, silk handkerchiefs inside to produce, magically, later. I made another magic wand out of a wooden dowel, cut into segments and then held together with a strong cord threaded inside. The cord held the pieces together under some tension, but then would “break apart” when you handed it to someone. Magic, AND a joke!
My uncle Rod was a teacher at Ensign School and I performed a magic show for his class. One of my tricks involved tying together three pieces of rope. One was red, one was white, and one was blue. I would tie the pieces together and then to ensure that everything was on the up and up, I would ask someone from the audience to take one end of the rope, while I held the other to show that the ropes were tied together tightly. Later I would reveal that the rope was all in one piece with no knots…like magic. Well, the person I asked to pull on the rope was Dawn Daniels. Dawn was, to say the least, very athletic. She played sports with the guys…and was a force to be reckoned with. Dawn pulled on the rope and nearly knocked me over. Everyone laughed. Magic…and an unexpected joke. How did it work? A magician never reveals his secrets. Except the one about the break apart magic wand.
I still have my magic kit, with an Eagle Magic catalog inside.

Thursday AND Friday night we enjoyed Marvyn's.... Jeff and Yvonne Hobson has a great, new magic venue in Palm Springs. Sean Paul and Juliana were joined on stage by Dirk Losander. The sophisticated crowd at Marvyns really enjoyed the Illusionist and the Ghost talker. The European charm and magic of Losander was very well received.
