Last year, the legendary, braised, and magnificent North Rim Lodge burned to the ground. It will be rebuilt in some way, but only our memories will truly bring us here again.

For 27 years, we made regular treks to Arizona to hike in the Grand Canyon. We often stayed here, a spirit mecca for our hearts, legs, and minds in need of recalibration. I've said if you blindfold me and set me on the side of the rim (I mean, please don't), I would know where I was. It has a magnetism as an open vein into the body of our layered and patchwork world. Some of my hardest and most evolutionary moments have taken place on dusty, beaten trails inside these walls.

Usually, my husband would run over to meet me while I took the shuttle from the South Rim. We would hike back the following day, usually the last day of the season - October 15th. Or, my friend Kate and I would go together. We'd stay the night, eat a big meal in the cavernous dining hall, and try to get some sleep. The night before was usually restless; part oxygen deprivation in my tiny east coast lungs, part excitement, and truly, part disassociative dread. Arriving at the indigo blue rim at 4:30am with dozens of anxious people is a memory chiseled in my own limestone life. In the early years, we were often alone; later we competed with busloads of happy and occasionally ill-prepared hikers.

It's time to let me know if you'd like to order a 2026 calendar. I'll send them out in time for the December holidays. In no particular order, the selected paintings are below.

Calendars will be here in the next week or so. They are $30 each. Payment is by Venmo, Cash or Check made out to Beth Sightler. If you haven't already said you want one (I've kept track of folks so far), please let me know in the comments, by text, or by messenger.

If you're local you can pick up at my house in the Old North End in Burlington.

Shipping is $10 (up to 2 in a mailer).

This year proceeds will benefit Outright Vermont, Association of Africans Living in Vermont (Youth Program), Amy's Armoire, and Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity. Thanks for all the great donation suggestions.

The bonus photo is because it's Randy and my 24th wedding anniversary

I could use your help with two things:

I'm taking recommendations for this year's calendar proceeds recipients. A few of the recipients over the years have been: Outright Vermont, Winooski Valley Wild Ways, Association for Africans Living in VT, the Family Room, Burlington Intervale, AME Emanuel Church, (Charleston, SC), Digger's Mirth, Good Samaritan House (Barre), Burlington City and Lake, HANDS, Journey to Recovery and others that I can't recall. I focus on smaller non-profits or initiatives where a few hundred bucks would make a difference. (Did you know "bucks" comes from the 1700s when deerhides/buckskin were used in trade?). Appreciate your ideas.

My second question is are you interested in a calendar this year? I'm putting them together and ordering soon. It will be helpful to know how many-ish to order. They'll be $30 (plus $10 if you want them mailed). Free for pick-up at my house in the BTV ONE.

Thanks, friends.
