Diana and Monty gave a young redheaded single mother a job in 1976. I learned so much from both during my many years working for them. I was Diana's apprentice with all the book work involved at that time, we are talking before computers. What I learned from her was invaluable, since that is where my bookkeeping career started. Also, in this time period, Monty decided to go to work on the road selling hardware for Orgill Bros. Diana, Mack Powell, and I kept the hardware store going. I never knew so many people had bad backs in Swain County. Mack was not always available, so literally left the women of hardware to do some heavy lifting. I'm sure Diana some days regretted her decision to give up her teaching career. But through dedication to each other and their customers, they together built an empire. We also worked 6 days a week, until the new store opened in about 1983. I learned the hardware part from Monty, in fact with overalls on, I was referred to as the little redhead boy that mixed paint. We sold everything individually, not prepackaged. Lots of teaching happened and I appreciate them both for having the patience. Thank You!
I have been going to Bryson City over last 6 years to work on a cabin out at Fontana lake. On these trips you can about be guaranteed I'll have to run to Ace Hardware here in Bryson City for items needed. Always had a good experience over the years until about 3 weeks ago. I went to hardware store on sat bc my w**d eater had just stopped on me. I went in and purchased a brand new Stihl w**d eater. Guys at back sold me the 3 ct pk of 2 cycle oil told me mixture ratio and I went back and mixed with one gallon of new gas as instructed. Now mind you I've been w**d eating for over 35 yrs so I know how to use w**d eater and mix gas for one. I used the w**d eater that very day and when it was about empty I stopped and went to refill it. Yes I know to let w**d eater cool down and shake gas can !!. Once I refilled it the rope would not pull to start. Wouldn't budge!!! So, next day I took it back to Ace only to be directed to Kevin who works in back. Told him what happened and he proceeds to tell me after looking at it raw gas was all that was run it. Now mind you gas was still in it not full but enough to see gas was blue meaning it had been mixed with 2 cycle oil. He took it apart and said it was locked up couldn't be fixed and I'd be better off to buy a new one. Now mind you this one only couple days old used once. He basically called me a liar by saying "I can tell you as someone who works on them this is locked up due to raw gas and can't be fixed. So I took my w**d eater and I decided right there and then I'd spent my last dollar here!! I had about $100.00 worth items in my arms and I laid them down and walked out!! But, what shocked me the most was after i started talking with some of the locals about my experience here I learned they are notorious for this very thing. I brought my Stihl w**d eater home and took it to my local guy here in town and he fixed in 35 mins. It was not locked as I was told up and it runs great!! Only charged me $30.00 to fix it. Added up all me receipts for everything I'd bought here over last 6 yrs and total came to just around $5800.00 not a fortune and I get it but, it was the last dime I'll ever spend there I can guarantee you that! I will stop at Lowe's on the way up and if I need something else while I'm there I'll take my business to Cherokee or Whittier!!

Most Sincerely,
Lisa C.

Founder’s Day is this Saturday, so we thought we’d share a little more about our Founder. Elder grew up in Chickamauga, GA. He boarded at the Darlington School in Rome, GA before attending Virginia Tech. Elder returned to Chickamauga in 1953 to work in the family business, Glenn Brothers Hardware Co. He and his wife, Jo Ann (Nash), were both active members of First Baptist Chickamauga and later moved to Chattanooga and became members at Brainerd Baptist Church. In 1969 he co-founded Ace Hardware of Chattanooga and served as its first President and Chairman. Elder served on the national board of directors of the Ace Hardware cooperative in the 80s. This experience coupled with his years on the sales floor, easy leadership style, and his genuine joy from being with Ace associates and customers modeled the culture and personality that permeates our business today. Today, we are a group of 27 stores serving the Chattanooga, Knoxville, Nashville, North Georgia, and Western North Carolina communities. We hope you will join us on Saturday as we celebrate our founder and our 54 years in business!
