Royal has been in our program for almost a year without an ounce of adoption interest. Carrying the weight of emotional baggage from an abusive past, Royal - who is just sweet as Honey 🍯 - has been chronically overlooked.

But there is a soft bed and a kind family hoping for a chance with our girl… and we are failing to get schedules to align.

So we’re putting out a last ditch effort.
We are desperately seeking someone who can get Royal from her Board & Train Program in Lewisville to her new foster family - her hopeful adoptive family - in Jarrell THIS SATURDAY.

Shadow has his intake visit today with our friends at Tabor Road Veterinary Hospital! Shoutout to his foster mama for driving him all the way in from out of town for his special visit. 🫶🏼

Shadow is heartworm NEGATIVE 🎉 and his f***l was NEGATIVE 🎉 too! So two less things to stress over. We ran a full comprehensive blood panel on him and, surprisingly, his numbers overall were pretty good. A couple elevated levels, but nothing worrisome. The doctor does agree with the suspected diagnosis of MMM, so we sent off his speciality test today, with results hopefully in 7-10 days. 🙏🏻 Given this is such a rare ailment, the suggested course of treatment in the immediate timeframe is to taper the steroids, evaluate health once weaned, and then proceed with appropriate medication therapy from there. It IS possible for dogs with MMM to go into remission, with medication therapy only necessitated for the occasional flair ups.

He WAS deemed healthy/stable enough for his vaccines and microchip implant, which is great and a relief.

So now he just needs:

Still pricy, but a better picture in hand! His bill today was $770.21. We’ve raised some for his care, but not enough to cover today’s visit… not his ongoing supportive care. But we have faith that the funds will come - that our army is standing behind us. 🫶🏼

A common misnomer for rescue work is that once an animal has safely exited a former placement (be in a shelter, owner surrender, street, etc.), then the animal is "safe" and thus attention and efforts can be funneled elsewhere. For dogs with critical and/or alarming external wounds or damage, fundraising efforts post-rescue are still, oftentimes (although not always), simpler.

It's the dogs like Shadow, however, who have non-visible illnesses who often have the greatest need, but the lowest level of support. Shadow is a 2 year old male(intact) pit bull living with suspected MMM - Masticatory Muscle Myositis, a painful autoimmune disorder that mistakenly attacks the dog’s chewing muscles (causing the significant muscle atrophy around the head and jaw).

Problem #1? The diagnostic tool for MMM is specific and cost $350 - a hefty expense, especially in today's economic climate.

His former family was unable to afford this expense, but had a veterinarian who was comfortable prescribing steroids (prednisone), the common treatment to mitigate MMM and its complications. But as the expense to keep him comfortable began to climb, his family was faced with the impossible decision to surrender him to a rescue program to meet his ongoing needs OR euthanize an otherwise healthy animal who has a real possibility of entering remission, if his disease can be well-managed.

Problem #2? He has no other vetting. No vaccines, no routine diagnostics (f***l, heartworm test, etc.). He's still intact. When a rescue makes a commitment to welcome a dog into their program, they know that there are basic vetting requirements before they can be adopted. This alone? Several hundred dollars.

Problem #3? We haven't even factored in the costs of managing his illness (i.e., medication therapy) nor costs associated with other diagnoses (... what if he's heartworm positive?) nor costs associated with his diet and nutrition - because if it is indeed MMM, kibble alone can be a challenge.

So what we're saying is that we need help to ensure Shadow receives the level of care he deserves. And without a visible illness or injury, fundraising for his care ($1,000+) is hard.

And we knew that when we accepted him... and yet, we welcomed him regardless.
Because he deserves a chance at life... and we know you all agree. ❤️‍🩹

🎀 MEET, BARB! 🎀

Barb found herself lost and alone a few weeks back, stumbling into a San Antonio [human] Emergency Room. A foster mama for another rescue working at the ER scooped her up and took her to get scanned and - voila! - she had a microchip! Unfortunately, weeks have passed without return contact from her original owners, indicating that she is no longer wanted. 🥺 So what do we do? Well… we accept her into our program, of course! 😍 Barb is a young adult female/spayed English Bulldog looking for her forever home! She has been social with other dogs, but she is ALL.BULLDOG. - so she can be bossy, head strong, and full of sass (if you know, you know!). Barb would do well in a home experienced with Bulldogs and can be with or without other dogs. We absolutely love this little lady and we can’t wait to get her into a home all of her own!

💔 Welcome, Shadow 💔

Shadow is a 2yo male pit bull mix living with suspected K9 MMM - Masticatory Muscle Myositis, a painful autoimmune disorder that mistakenly attacks the dog’s chewing muscles (causing the significant muscle atrophy around the head and jaw). Shadow was owner surrendered in the DFW area; his owners loved him dearly but didn’t feel they had the financial resources necessary for his ongoing care. 💔 Unfortunately, there is no cure for MMM, but there are documented ways to keep flair ups from happening too frequently with medication therapy.

Shadow enters our program with a laundry list of care needs, including: vaccines, neuter, heartworm test (dear lord, please be negative), and formal diagnostics to confirm (or rule out) the diagnosis.

As we enter the busiest season of the year (Bully Bash, Pitmas, End of Year…), we know our asks will begin to tick upwards. We are incredibly grateful for any support able to be gifted to him. 🙏🏻

Transformation Tuesday with Moo! 🐮
Can you believe it? Moo has more than doubled his weight and finally LOOKS as healthy as he feels! 🥹 We’re actively looking for Moo’s forever family (and have several amazing candidates!), but we’d like to remind everyone that Moo has four siblings who have NO INTEREST at all. 🥺

Another week come and gone, and another week where Roary has no adoption interest... 🥺
