More for my partnership with Crawfordsville Main Street for Preservation Month!
Despite the year on the front of the Otto Schlemmer Building, the original brick structure was built in 1854, and was one of the first brick commercial structures in downtown Crawfordsville. The building then changed hands one half at a time (north and south) until Otto Schlemmer (a German immigrant) purchased the southern half in 1882 and the northern half in 1885.
By 1889, Schlemmer had renovated both halves of the building, raised the roof, added metal cornices, and a brick arcade on the facade. He operated the Casino Saloon in the north half, rented out the southern half to other commercial ventures, and the upstairs had furnished rooms for rent. Schlemmer’s son George briefly took over operating the saloon after Otto’s retirement, but from about 1915-1925 operated the Schlemmer Drug Company. The building has also housed a bakery, license branch, cab company, and bus station (information from the National Register nomination completed by Bruce and Cynthia Lynch in 1978).
