Beansprouts Nursery School has been a Park Slope tradition since 1980. Our classrooms belong to the children and our teachers serve as guides and mentors.
Beansprouts was founded in 1980 and serves children between the ages of 2 to 9. From its beginnings as a cooperative preschool in a single classroom, Beansprouts has grown into a significant neighborhood resource for children and their families. We offer a comprehensive program which promotes physical, emotional, social and cognitive development.
Operating as usual
Art allows children to show off their creative side. Art can also be used as a form of self-expression, a communication method and supports pre-literacy development. Anyone can be an artist, show us the artist in you! #beansproutsnurseryschool
Our Prospect Park tree study allows our students to gain hands-on experiences, as well as an introduction to the scientific method. #beansproutsbrooklyn #beansproutsnurseryschool

The children's natural curiosity about our classroom’s dramatic play kitchen led us to expand upon that interest with an exploration of grocery stores and cooking this month. Our dramatic play area was transformed into the “Apple Seed Market” and the children took turns at the front counter, at the checkout area, and as customers toting baskets of groceries.
One of our 4s artist of the month was Sayed Haider Raza, an Indian artist who became famous for his use of shapes and the ‘bindu’ as the focal point of his art. Friends used color pastels to make a black bindu in the middle-as the point where everything started-before making colorful circles around it. We also made a large fall collage, using leaves we collected from our tree, paint markers, yarn, glitter and cellophane! There were many chants of ‘glitter is my favorite’!
In our 3s class while playing in the block center we connected it to our focus this week; Shadows. We learned how shadows are made and how they change. We learned that we can control the size, shape, the lightness, and the darkness of a shadow too. To examine shadows further we made our own puppets and used a flashlight to experiment with their shadows against paper on a wall.
Happy Hallow-bean!

Our 3s class visited the firehouse on 11th Street! The children learned about fire safety, sat in front of the fire engine's steering wheel, and saw what a firefighter looks like in their uniform. We had a great time!
After two weeks in the classroom our butterflies have emerged from their chrysalises! We were all so thrilled to see their wings and watch them move!

Having our families be part of our classroom community is integral at Beansprouts. On this day we welcomed a classmates grandpa into the classroom to tell us about being a firefighter. He shared some stories, answered our questions, and let us try on his fire hat!
Children develop creativity, social skills and fine motor skills with open-ended art projects where they can make choices, use their imaginations, and create with their hands. On Artsy Thursday we celebrate the joy and learning children experience when engaged in creative art making #woyc19
