Le Portrait de Dorian Gray (wood engraving, inscribed by the artist) by [WILDE, OSCAR]; SIMÉON, FERNAND (ARTIST); [COQ, ANDRÉ]

Paris: Édition Mornay, 1920. Inscribed presentation copy of this striking wood engraving by Art Deco illustrator Fernand Siméon (1884-1928), featuring Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray. Siméon's stylized image, which captures the aesthetic sensibility and sinister undercurrent of Wilde's 1890 novel, was issued as the frontispiece to Mornay's 1920 French edition. Siméon has warmly inscribed this engraving to Paris publisher André Coq, who hired Siméon to illustrate Anatole France's Marguerite that same year. A fine signed print. Wood engraving, measuring 5 x 3.5 inches, printed in black on a sheet of ivory paper measuring 7.75 x 5.5 inches, tipped to a slightly larger backing sheet. Inscribed in pencil beneath image: "A l'ami Coq / Editeur sympathetique / F Siméon."

THE COUNTRY GIRLS by Edna O'Brien

London: Hutchinson & Co, 1960. First Edition of Edna O'Brien's groundbreaking first novel, the story of two provincial girls in Dublin, described by O'Brien as "my experience of Ireland and my farewell to it."

Banned for its sexual content, The Country Girls was burned in O'Brien's village churchyard by her family's parish priest, but is now considered a classic of modern Irish fiction.

"The black underwear was Baba's idea. She said that we wouldn't have to wash it so often; and that it was useful if we ever had a street accident, or if men were trying to strip us in the backs of cars. Baba thought of all these things. I got black nylons too. I read somewhere that they were 'literary' and I had written one or two poems since I came to Dublin. I read them to Baba and she said they were nothing to the ones in mortuary cards." A near-fine copy, uncommon signed by O'Brien.

Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey by Maira Kalman

(New York): G.P. Putnam's Sons, 2002. First edition of one of the earliest picture books to depict the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, originally a fundraiser for the Twin Towers Orphan Fund. Kalman tells the true story of the John J. Harvey, a long-retired New York fireboat pressed into service after the Twin Towers collapsed: "The water pipes were broken and buried. And the fire trucks that had raced to the scene could not pump water. . . . For four days and nights the Harvey pumped water. The crew took turns sleeping. People brought supplies: fuel, sweaters, gloves, pizza, sandwiches and coffee. They worked and cried. They fought the fire until it was under control." A fine copy, signed by Kalman with a sketch of the Harvey's ladder. Quarto, measuring 10 x 10 inches: [44]. Original color pictorial paper boards, pale blue pictorial endpapers, original unclipped color pictorial dust jacket. Color illustrations throughout text. Signed by Maira Kalman with a sketch of a ladder facing title page.

Edward Sherburne’s translations of Seneca’s tragedies (1701), warmly inscribed to Abednego Seller, who like Sherburne had lost a great library: “From his most obliged, and (tho unfortunate) most Grateful, Affectionate, humble, Servant. / Edw. Sherburne.” Translator Sherburne was a Cavalier poet, a Roman Catholic, and a Loyalist during the English Civil War, when his estate, including his tremendous library, was seized in retribution for his allegiance to Charles I. Sherburne’s interest in the Stoic philosopher Seneca, who committed su***de by order of his emperor, perhaps reflects his own political sacrifices. Although Sherburne was protected under Charles II and James II, he could not (as a Roman Catholic) take the oaths under William and Mary, causing him to lose his livelihood: his final years were “unfortunate” as a consequence. The recipient of this copy, Abednego Seller, also forfeited his position during the Glorious Revolution; Seller’s own library was consumed in a fire in 1700. #seneca #edwardsherburne #tragedy #translation #commiseration #medea #phaedraandhippolytus #troades #therapeofhelen #rarebooks #bookstagram

First edition of The Pupil of Pleasure (1776), an epistolary novel published two years after Lord Chesterfield’s Letters to His Son. In that controversial bestseller, Chesterfield advises his son to cultivate an open, inviting manner while steadily advancing his own interests. Philip Sedley, the young hero of The Pupil of Pleasure, takes “the divine Letters” as his gospel: “what our Garrick is to Shakespeare, I am resolved to be to Chesterfield – the living comment upon the dead text.” What begins as comic rakery in a seaside town turns into something much darker, in this fascinating fictional (and meta-epistolary) critique. #thepupilofpleasure #lordchesterfield #letters #advice #strategy #politics #seduction #manners #morals #rarebooks #bookstagram

A Brooklyn Christmas story: The Coat-Hanger Christmas Tree by Newbery winner Eleanor Estes, set along the waterfront during the early 1970s. A young girl struggles to convince her preoccupied bohemian mother to let the family have a Christmas tree. “The city is like a giant Christmas tree. The bridges are the branches, and you know what we are? A decoration at the end of the long branch that is the Brooklyn Bridge.” One scene is very clearly set in Sahadi’s grocery on Atlantic Avenue, still there. This holiday season, browse through Honey & Wax Catalog 10 as you wait in line for your booster or PCR. Will these books arrive in time for Christmas? No. It’s December 23. But if there’s one thing this year has taught us, it’s that we can wait when we have to, and enjoy being together all the more when we’re finally reunited. Wishing you a safe and peaceful holiday, and longing to see you on the other side of all this.

First edition of the first scholarly work on Shakespeare written by a woman, novelist Charlotte Lennox’s Shakespear Illustrated (1753). Encouraged by her friend Samuel Johnson, who ghost-wrote the introduction, Lennox pulled together source material for ten of Shakespeare’s plays, translating much of it, observing that Shakespeare often loses the motives of the female characters he adapts in the shift to the stage. The success of Shakespear Illustrated prompted Lennox to publish a hastily assembled third volume in 1754, but this first edition is complete “in two volumes,” as originally issued. #charlottelennox #thefemalequixote #shakespearillustrated #shakespeare #boccaccio #saxogrammaticus #holinshed #plautus #cinthio #bandello #litcrit #complit #rarebooks #bookstagram
