Writing a new piece for La Guardia High School bands and a consortium of co-commissioners. These new pieces are a new direction for me within my body of work for band. All We Can Save draws from the eco-feminist themes of the book of the same name and Awaz will feature a singer and improvisation structures a la Anthony Braxton. If you are interested in supporting these works or joining the consortium commission check out the link in the bio.

Shayna Dunkelman and I are going to bring the noise (and our kids) this Saturday afternoon at This gig is all ages so bring your little ones, bring your adult ones and join us for an afternoon of fun creative music!
Saying “yes and” to whatever emerges creatively helps me avoid writer block and gain momentum with what I am working on. Once I come up with some material I have something to edit into the sound of the piece. Here is the melody that emerged today. 🎶

Back at it! After a round of feedback it’s time to rewrite a few parts. I love it when working with a conductor is a true collaboration. This will be a new wind ensembles piece for John Hersey High School that features an improvised solo. Stay tuned!
From our recent residency. I am really excited about this new band. We just recorded the set in the studio. I think this is the beginning of a new direction for me. Stay tuned!

Some people are curious about what my life and work as a musician actually looks like on the day to day. Right now I need to rewrite a trombone 1 part because what I wrote is not playable for most highschool students. So now I have to create a new part that fits the trombone into the harmony with everyone else. It is sort of like figuring out a puzzle. It’s also a slow process so I am procrastinating by posting on IG. 😝

I am working on some new music for LaGurdia High school symphonic band and a consortium of conductors and institutions. I am thinking a lot about some words shared by my friend .nyc “Follow the bread crumbs and let the piece be what it wants to be.” Today the piece wants to be these harmonic fields that a bunch of independent melodies move through while the theme soars overhead. Let’s see where it leads me tomorrow.
