"Embracing Silliness: 826NYC's Transition to Online Learning" by writer and editor Azka Anwar discusses her work with 826NYC during their transition to virtual programming. Read about 826NYC's "third space" where children are empowered to be creative and to decide for themselves what that creativity should look like. 826NYC and the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company

Community is about coming together to be the best we can be as a whole. Sometimes that means working together to help our neighbors who are less fortunate. Please consider making a small donation so we can create as many quality meals as possible.

“You can make a difference. While things sometimes seem out of our control, it’s important that we all take some time to think about and realize what kind of impact we can make on our communities if we all give back just a little. I’d like to highlight a few of my favorites right now, but there are many people and organizations out there who are doing good things for our communities and the more we support them, the more people we can help together.

For a few years, I spent most of my Wednesdays here at 826NYC and the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company, which has run after school programs for kids in the community for almost 2 decades. I decided to put together a bag of superhero goodies (proceeds from the store helps fund the tutoring programs) and meals from Heavenly Harvst, the innovative solution for people with food insecurity in a GIVE bag. The GIVE bag is a really amazing thing. You can get them for free just by requesting one from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation (provided by the generous new owners of the Mets, Alex and Steve Cohen), and the point is to fill it with items to be given to someone else. The person who receives the bag is then supposed to fill it again and give it to someone else right down the line. Spreading kindness.

Giving is something we should all do, but now our neighbors all need some generosity and kindness. If we all perform just a few acts of kindness each day to our communities, we can make a big difference in the lives of others, and ultimately ourselves. Go help someone today!”

We're wrapping up the first installment of our #BookOfTheWeek series with this awesome memoir by Neoma R. K., reminding us that oftentimes, the places we call home can look like strange fantasies to those who are only visiting.

In “More Than a Residence,” Neoma pens a love letter to the odd and wonderful place she calls home. You can read her full story and many other great tales from NYC young writers in “All I Have to Say,” an inspiring collection of memoirs by High School of Fashion Industries and 826NYC and the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company students. And stay tuned for next week's book, coming from a land of great music, delicious Creole cuisine, and unique vibrancy.

From Spiderman to the Madrigals, we love a good character! In this workshop we'll create heroes, villains, ordinary people, or complicated in-betweens, and figure out what makes them who they are. At the end of the week, students will showcase their character—their dreams, fears, and desires—in a monologue or scene! This program is available as a full-day camp for grades 4-6, and as a Zoom workshop for grades 7-9. Join us: 826nyc.org/summer-workshops.

What wonders does the future hold?? In this workshop, we'll write stories inspired by science fiction and the hopeful futures of utopian fiction, featuring out-of-this-world progress from time travel, to new inventions, to previously unexplored galaxies. Students will venture into the unknown, and come out of class with their own, original sci-fi story! Sign up now to join us in the future: http://826nyc.org/summer-workshops

In our second week of summer writing, things will be getting a little…wait for it…suspenseful! Students will explore classic mysteries and follow a trail of handwritten notes, secret passages, and shocking reveals. Examples in literature, film, and even board games will inspire original and intriguing short stories that will be sure to have you on the edge of your seat until the very end! Sign up to join us:

Spring has sprung and we have books! This fall 826NYC partnered with Beacon programs at six schools for a special journaling project. They made lists of their favorite people and places, defined their nicknames, and explained the real problem with celery. They wrote poems and stories, advice and encouragement, and reminded us: You’re Worth More Than Anything. https://www.superherosupplies.com/products/youre-worth-more-than-anything?_pos=1&_sid=ae1a82a17&_ss=r
