Yesterday, Pre and Lower School students were thrilled to engage with author, illustrator, and cartoonist George O'Connor. His series of graphic novels about the lives of Greek gods, "Olympians", are among the most popular books in the school’s library across grade levels. Students enjoyed asking George questions about his work and watched as he drew, showing his creative process. Thanks to BFS-family-run bookstore, Stories Bookshop + Storytelling Lab, who helped make this special event possible! #VirtualBFS #BFSCommunity #BFSLibrary
After what feels like a million years of remote learning, there is a light at the end of this endless tunnel. While there are have been many challenges, I have had a shift in perspective the last week. I have been shaken to my core about what happened to George Floyd and knowing that the black community has been impacted way more than any other through the quarantine. My life has been inconvenienced but I am fully aware of how lucky me and my family are.
I have decided that this summer will be about listening, learning and educating myself and Quinn about the Black Lives Matter movement. I am anxiously awaiting my book order from Stories Bookshop + Storytelling Labwith books handpicked by Maggie I am sharing a direct link to their Black Stories Matter book recommendations because I know so many of us are feeling like we have to do something and can only hope that teaching our children as early on as possible that they can be part of the change that will actually make a difference.

I am SO grateful for all your posts, texts, emails, re-tweets, re-grams, book reviews, purchases, shout-outs… thank you SO MUCH for helping You Can’t F*ck Up Your Kids become the no. 1 new release and no. 2 bestseller (behind only Rachel Hollis) on Amazon in “motherhood,” no. 3 in “pregnancy and childbirth” and no. 5 in “parenting & families” humor — in a time where parenting and families doesn’t feel very humorous! 🤪
•••
Tonight, I was supposed to be at a big book launch event at the adorable local indie bookseller Stories Bookshop + Storytelling Lab in conversation with the incomparable The Fifth Trimester, but obviously you know why those plans got postponed indefinitely. So instead, I put on the dress I bought just for the occasion, and posed in my backyard with the book — because it’s still worth celebrating, even though we’re all socially distanced! (And thank you to @bradklyn for being an amazing Instagram husband!)
•••
Plans get derailed. Schedules get screwed. I think right now we’re all learning a lesson in resilience and adaptability, which I would argue is a more important life skill than doing math worksheets with our kids! (And, btw, you’re allowed to both be SO grateful for your health and SO frustrated/sad/whatever about how unpredictable life is right now...)
•••
Also, if you haven’t bought the book yet, I link in my bio to a couple places it’s available, including Amazon Books and signed at @Stories. Thank you! Xoxo #noshameparenting

I've partnered with one of my favorite local bookstores, Stories Bookshop + Storytelling Lab, to sign any copy of my book that you pre-order. Yes, they ship. Please consider supporting local businesses during this crazy time: https://shop.storiesbk.com/product/you-can-t-f-ck-up-your-kids-by-lindsay-p.

Speaking of craziness, the central theme of my book is calm and reassurance for us as parents. We all have a lot of questions about what's next, and what we should do with our kids in the meantime. While I don't discuss the pandemic directly in my book (um, thankfully, a break!!!!), I do break down the science on why it's OK to ramp up screen time (especially in times like now), why it's important to take care of yourself (in addition to others), and why you can go easy on yourself with things like making the "perfect" meal when we've all already got a lot on our plates.

Stay healthy and safe, and we'll get through this. x
One of my all time favorite children's book is The Color Monster by Anna Llenas. It has been a huge hit with my kids at The Meeting House and taught so many kids about feelings and emotions. I am pretty sure I might have squealed out of delight when I walked into Stories Bookshop + Storytelling Lab in Park Slope and saw she had another popup book. I Love You (almost always) is about how wonderful and complicated friendship can be at times. I can't wait to read this to my little friends in the upcoming weeks.

The tricky thing about my holiday gift guides is that new items come out after I publish them. One example is the adorable and awesome The Crayons Christmas by Oliver Jeffers. This interactive book reintroduces us to some of our favorite characters from the first two books but also includes a bunch of activities that work on developing fine motor and grasping skills and improves visual motor and visual perceptual skills.

While the title suggests this is only a Christmas book, it's not. This book talks about Hanukkah as well and has some really cute activities to educate and celebrate the holiday.

Since it is Small Business Saturday, I feel inclined to express my love for my local kids stores who sell some amazing books: Stories Bookshop + Storytelling Lab, LuLu's Cuts & Toys, Norman & Jules and Pink Olive
If you are looking to purchase some social emotional focused books to the libraries of the kids you love this holiday season, be sure to check out my suggestions:

So thrilled to share with you this book news!!! Inspired by a word game I played with my mom as a kid; I found it hilarious at the time; like many wonders of childhood, when I saw it with adult eyes, it seemed richer and deeper. I’m incredibly lucky to be making this book alongside my friend the brilliant @heytheredasha + @mariaclairerusso a true picture book sage. ✨📚💕

Fox + Dodge are skeptical of the fuss about bored billionaires blasting into space in fancy rockets. Do they not have access to a good junk pile? A stray pool noodle + toilet plunger? Or for that matter, a lively imagination?! Lovely to see A Fort on the Moon featured among other imagination centered picture books in this month’s @thehornbook 🌕🪠🚀💙

A couple more weeks of them sharing a room. I like having my whole heart safely tucked up in one space each night. It’s a happy room, sad to think of packing it up. Change is hard, even when you’ve chosen it. 💙😭

Packing for the move/obsessively pouring over the Stories archives. Who do I love as much as booksellers? Children’s book illustrators. These geniuses live with their imaginations on the outside, fully present + at the ready. These drawings are from our Sunday Storytimes, workshops, book launches + other events in the Storytelling Lab; many were tossed off in 5 minutes with short, speedy, be-markered collaborators trying to trip them. I’ll put more up in stories. These 10 are by:

Me + my tired mug packing up the last of the Stories inventory for the literary angels @houseofspeakeasy — the Bookmobile comes to pick up the boxes today! Booksellers are a curious combination of critic, fan, confidant, tastemaker, keen observer + pure muscle 💪 On a given day at Stories our booksellers would walk up the stairs retrieving inventory ten times, recommend books for families on grief or gender identity, curate a gorgeous window display of graphic novels, sing a song to cheer a crying baby, buoy a tired parent, make me laugh + tell me what film to watch, etc. Miss those days. People keep asking me if I have a secret plan to open a bookshop in the Hudson Valley and the answer is no! I’m a once in a lifetime kind of bookshop girl + there are so many good people doing that well upstate already. But I’ll always be a bookseller at heart. Bless the book people! Long may they shine. 📚💙

Eric Carle 1929-2021. RIP. What a gorgeous, life changing body of work he leaves behind. The thing about the great children’s book creators is that they live at your house for years at a time, a constant presence, a memorized, cherished daily visitor. I read Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me to both these boys 100 times at least. And how many times did @oasweet, @foxmeetsworld, @meganpayne__, @jenn.cathy (and others) and I read From Head to Toe at Storytime in the Stories Storytelling Lab? Countless! “Can you do it? I can do it!” These photos were from a pilgrimage to @carlemuseum in my hometown Amherst, MA that we made in August 2019. A joyful expedition—go as soon as you are able. 📚💙

Lost two teeth in two days. Last night after the first, he asked if I was the tooth fairy. I have a rule about never telling an outright lie to my kids so I stood there thinking for a moment. Then we all cried. In the morning he told me in an ironic tone what the tooth fairy had delivered. I said we could still make believe you know. Just we’d be doing it together. Older one agreed. There’s magic in make believe as sure as in fairies. 🦷😭💙

Completely obsessed with them since 2010 + 2013, respectively. Older one said today: if there’s a Mother’s Day + a Father’s Day, why isn’t there an older sibling day + a younger sibling day? And then we thought, why stop there? Aunt day + cousin day + steps day etc etc! Here’s to making your own damn days + finding excuses to give your loves a squeeze. 💙

One day this winter when the boys were in school @instamattus + I took a walk in the snow in Central Park and decided to leap into a new life. About a week later we made an offer on a house in the Hudson Valley—the one house we looked at. Yesterday it became ours. We move in June. We met at college in NYC at 19 + have never not been New Yorkers together. We love Brooklyn + though our life there has felt unsustainable for several years, it is so sad to leave — also stunning + thrilling. It feels a bit like how we leapt into building Stories (we only looked at one space then, too, and just knew). No doubt this adventure will be just as wonderful, scary, challenging, hopeful, tiring + joyful. 💙

We are VERY serious about Indie Bookstores! Here we are BEING SERIOUS that one time we went to Paris in @shakespeareandcoparis! @indiebookstoreday is Sat. 4/24–the perfect time to support your favorite indies. As a bookshop owner I sometimes felt I was asking people for the favor of supporting us when we all knew they could get books cheaper online but that is really so backwards and indie booksellers do their communities the favor of being enlightened + welcoming + inspiring spaces every day while also giving you the consumer an ethical commerce choice + they put the coolest books possible in front of your eyeballs + you get to chat with really smart people who consider the problem of your next read a compelling + solvable one. I miss our Stories’ booksellers so much btw. Support your local booksellers while you still can, Book Fam. 📚💙

#fbf I’m working on a little presentation on my book A Fort on the Moon for @ps321bk + found this photo of my kids who inspired me to write A Fort on the Moon in front of the house that inspired Fox + Dodge’s house in the book. It’s in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, near where I live + I’ve always been curious about the house and its history. I thought the house + the boys deserved a book about curiosity, imagination + dreaming big dreams.
All kids deserve to have their dreams + curiosity celebrated. Thinking a lot about how the color of my kids’ skin protects them from so much and what we and they can do with the luxury of that relative safety to protect those who are denied it💙
