Students at Central Davidson Middle School got hands-on with the Build Your Own Speaker kit, wiring up a working speaker from the ground up.

What looks like a fun build is really a lesson in how sound actually works. To get sound out of their speaker, students put together a circuit and a coil that turns electrical signals into the vibrations our ears pick up as music. It's the same principle behind every set of headphones and concert speaker, and the foundation of a real career in audio engineering.
