Missing Broken Arrow Series:
Broken Arrow’s Original Water Supply Pump Houses
by Teresa Tucker

The water supply for the city of Broken Arrow originally came from springs in the south part of town. Ray Harral Nature Center contains the remains of the original pump house, which made water available to citizens in 1909. Springs can be found throughout the area. Take a hike through the park and notice the remains of the houses. Ray Harral is a 40 acre park with 3 miles of walking trails, picnic shelters and a nature center.

This Building Still Talks, Under Construction Addition: From First State Bank to Main Street Tavern Broken Arrow
Vernon Williams poses on Main Street in front of the soon-to-be First State Bank. This brick building was constructed to replace the original wooden First State Bank structure, seen on the right side of this photo. The impressive two-story brick building still stands today and has served in various capacities. Once completed, the brick structure housed the First State Bank on the ground floor and the Opera House on the second floor. Unfortunately, the community could not support three banks, so when First State closed, the presidents of AVB and FNB met in a friendly session to divide the accounts alphabetically. The first graduation program for BAHS was held here in 1908, and classes for the Haskell State College were held here while the college was under construction. For most of its history, the ground floor was a drug store (Quigg Drug, Ross Drug)but it now serves as a restaurant, Main Street Tavern, and the second floor serves as an event center. #brokenarrow #brokenarrowok #keepinghistoryalive #museumsmatter

April’s exhibit showcases four show stopping works by artist Bryan Turnham. “Born and raised in Tulsa. I have been creating in some form or another my whole life with my main focus on photography, drums and painting. Whether it’s with a camera or oils on a canvas my general style is taking something dark and grungy then adding a layer of sweetness and color. Creating a sweet and sour contrast for the viewer to interpret and draw from in their own way.” #museumsmatter #brokenarrowoklahoma #museumba

The Museum BA staff spent the day in Oklahoma City at the Oklahoma History Center’s Symposium. We learned so much, networked with historians and museum colleagues, and even ran into an old friend, Colonel Ernest Childers. We were so proud to see our hometown hero’s story being shared in the OK History Center. #museumba #oklahoma #muscogee #ernestchilders #MedalofHonor #MuscogeeCreek #thunderbirds #ww2history #childers

Missing Broken Arrow Series: Broken Arrow Public Schools By: Teresa Tucker
Broken Arrow Public Schools began it’s early days in the Methodist Church building. In 1904 a two story school building was constructed and students began classes in November of the same year. The original building burned down and the current building at the corner of Main and Detroit was built to house grade school students. The grade school eventually became Central Junior High, which changed to Central Middle School, and is now Central on Main. After students attended the grade school, they would make their way down College Street to the Broken Arrow High School. Broken Arrow currently has four Early Childhood Centers, 16 Elementary schools, five middle schools, one Freshman Academy, one Options Academy, one Virtual Academy, one Early College Academy, one Vanguard Academy, one Broken Arrow High School. Central Middle School no longer exists even though the building still exists. The original grade school burned down and was replaced. The original Broken Arrow High School no longer exists and was moved to Albany Street. These buildings are now a part of “Missing Broken Arrow.”
