The final installment in our Women Makers series.

MELANIE ABRANTES

"I love going on 'inspiration walks' near my home in Oakland. There are so many parks nearby where I can
take in nature's beauty! I pay attention to the texture of a crumbling cliffside, the earth-toned colors of the
hills and the soft curve of a flower petal. So much beauty and inspiration exists right in our backyards."

MICHELE QUAN

“Impermanence & interconnection are ideas that I return to often, drawing inspiration from the
writings and teachings of Buddhism and its extensive visual language that points to the heart
and the experience of living. I understand the meanings to be universal and independent of
religious attachments.”

STEPHANIE PINERIO

“To the layperson, making cloth by hand seems like a romantic proposition. While it’s hard to
debunk centuries of myth, a visitor to Shed Textile’s studio might be tempted to give it a try.”

We developed the colors and patterns featured here in partnership with Stepahnie for our private label group. Swipe to shop and explore the artisan at Comerford Collection.

DANA BRANDWEIN

“My aim is to make beautiful, comforting objects to use everyday. Whether it’s the bowl you always reach for or a bedside lamp, I’m hoping whatever I make will make you smile. I get most of my inspiration for these objects in nature. Our studios are surrounded by beautiful views of wetlands, rolling hills and a little woods, so I don’t have to go far to be inspired.”

KAREN TINNEY

“An artist and designer whose work consists of pieces that combine ceramic and fiber, drawing inspiration from the interplay of the materials. Within her work, the two materials never live alone, relying on each other for structure and completeness. The fiber components are incorporated where the ceramics leave off; completing the shape or acting as the physical connection between incomplete parts.”

preconceived idea. Nature inspires my primitive/modern collection of bronze and silver jewelry.”

“Watch a plant grow, and you see its intention is perfect. It uses just the right shape, amount of color, and texture to fulfill its pliant, living design. I try to emulate this “biosophy” in clay—without doing realistic imitations of plants.”

“My earliest memory of art is associated with the paintings my father did in his spare time. These were mainly portraits of the family and still life studies.

My godparents were an engaging couple from New York, living in Caracas at the time, their house was literally filled with contemporary sculpture and painting. My siblings and I would wander around their house exploring works by artists such as Kenneth Armitage, Barbara Hepworth, Jesús Soto, Jim Dine, Elsworth Kelly... only later realizing the marvels we had been looking at.”

“My artistic intentions veer more toward abstraction and the emotional functions of objects rather than literal representational depictions.

Clay found me at a perfect moment in my life... It’s a therapeutic and meditative process that ends with an object that could be for use or just ornament, it’s kind of addictive.”

Matthew Ward is a self-taught ceramicist, originally based in Brooklyn, since relocated his studio to New Mexico. Ward’s ceramic creations are both sophisticated and fun. They have incredible texture, distinguishable geometric forms and dynamic colorings. Find out more about the artisan on our Blog in the Bio link and explore his pieces at Comerford Collection.

"My artworks came from wanting to create fabric without the boundaries of design. When designing cloth for industrial production there are so many considerations: how does it repeat, how many colours can the mill weave in one cloth, is it suitable for its practical purpose etc etc. I wanted to let go of all these boundaries and weave a cloth where I could express my ideas freely, playing with scale, colour and proportion in a more abstract way."

The Madeline pillow by Margo Selby. Swipe for a glimpse at the weaving process and discover the textile artisan at Comerford Collection.
