July’s theme, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, took us on quite the journey! From soaring aircraft and classic automobiles to busy railways and everything in between, we loved seeing the many creative ways everyone interpreted this month’s theme.

A new month brings a new creative challenge, and this August, we’re celebrating the power of color to tell a story.

📸 August Theme: One Color, One Story

Choose one dominant color and make it the star of your photograph. Whether it’s the golden glow of a sunflower, the deep blue of the ocean, the vibrant red of a classic car, or the rich greens of a summer forest, we want to see how a single color can capture a mood, memory, or moment.

Your interpretation is completely up to you. The color can be bold or subtle, found in nature, architecture, portraits, street photography, or still life. The goal is to let one color tell the story. All photography styles are welcome, whether you shoot film or digital.

Creative Focus: Color & Composition
Think about how color influences emotion and draws the viewer’s eye. Experiment with light, contrast, perspective, and framing to create an image where one color becomes the focal point and helps tell your story.

Bonus Challenge:
Capture a monochromatic image where one color dominates nearly the entire frame.

Capture an image featuring a train, plane, or automobile. Whether it’s a freight train rolling through town, an airplane soaring overhead, a classic car at a local cruise night, a race car, or your everyday ride, we want to see your unique perspective. Your subject can be in motion or standing still—focus on composition, creativity, and the story your image tells.

Your interpretation can be literal or creative. Focus on the vehicle itself, the people around it, or the story it helps tell. All photography styles are welcome, whether you shoot film or digital.

Creative Focus: Motion & Storytelling

Think about how movement—or the feeling of movement—can add energy to your image. Experiment with composition, timing, or perspective to create a photograph that captures the spirit of travel, adventure, or everyday life.

Are you familiar with photographer August Sander? 📸

One of the highlights of our trip to Connecticut was visiting the Yale University Art Gallery, where we caught an exhibit of Sander’s work. The museum itself was incredible, with so much amazing art to explore.

Sander is best known for People of the 20th Century, a long-term project documenting people from all walks of life through portraiture.

May’s theme, Caught in the Moment, brought in so many incredible entries. From candid expressions and everyday interactions to fleeting moments that might have otherwise gone unnoticed, it was inspiring to see how each photographer interpreted the theme in their own unique way.
