There’s something special about filming people who are genuinely rooted in what they do.

Our recent project took us across Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico with the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union, an organization built on the belief that farmers deserve a seat at the table when policy decisions are made.

Multi-generational ranchers. Backyard gardeners. Small producers. All of them invested in the future of food, and all of them with something worth hearing.

If you haven’t seen our latest video with RMFU, the link is below and it can also be found on our website.

In Kern and Merced County, California, Julie Finzel of the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources is working with local farmers to study the impacts of integrating cover crops and sheep grazing in almond orchards. In conventional almond orchards throughout California, these techniques are not implemented and the rows between the trees are bare soil with little to no microbial activity. With these methods, farmers Benina Montes of Burroughs Family Farms and Brett Sill of Sill Properties are noticing an increase in soil organic matter and nutrient density in their almonds.

This Western SARE grant allowed the producers to study whether integrating sheep into the orchard is a safe practice for human consumption. So far, results have shown a positive relationship between incorporating sheep into the orchard for overall orchard, human, and animal health.

The team plans to use the research findings from this study to apply for a larger grant to conduct further research and determine whether this is a safe and effective practice at scale.

Rocky Mountain Farmers Union stands as a vital grassroots organization for the family farms and rural communities of New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. By grounding their mission in the pillars of policy, education, and cooperation, RMFU creates a unified voice for everyone invested in the future of food from the stewards of multi-generational cattle ranches to the creators of thriving backyard gardens.

The organization’s impact goes beyond the field, championing the human side of agriculture through initiatives such as AgWell, which provides critical mental health resources and support for those on the front lines of production. Through specialized cooperative development and leadership training, RMFU ensures that agricultural professionals and everyday consumers alike are part of a resilient, connected community. It is a shared journey where the health of the land and the well-being of the people are woven together to build a stronger food system for all.
