At Catalyst Coaching we are focused on one thing, delivering high quality cycling coaching. Just because one methodology has worked for one person, does not mean it will work for another. This applies increasingly across ages and disciplines. Every athlete deserves an approach that is best suited for them, and that is what we strive to offer. We are not interested in cookie cutter programs, just programs that will help athletes get the best results they're capable of.

It’s an over used saying, but I can’t help it - I couldn’t feel happier for putting together an excellent race in St. George to finish 4th. I bet that most people that know Kev would rank him in their top 5 hardest working and nicest people. I certainly would. Someone that everyone wants good things to happen too, and someone who genuinely wants good things to happen to other people…which isn’t that common always in elite athletics. Thanks for all you do Kev.

2024, in no particular order. It’s been really fun. Some successes, some disappointments, plenty of learning, lots of hard work. Thanks to all the athletes that worked with us in 2024, it’s been a privilege.

One of our favorite results for 2024 – lined up for the Iceman a little over a week ago in Michigan but was put in one of the later waves. Being in a slower wave meant he wasn’t going to be able to compete for the win. He did however win the best alternative podium – setting a new passing record with almost 1,100 folks. That’s a lot of “on yer lefts!” Awesome ride Jake!

Even with hot summer temperatures, a pre-race warmup is essential to prep the body (and mind). However, the duration of the warmup ought to decrease compared to what you would do on cooler days. Spend a few minutes at endurance pace and then include a threshold and 1-2 short VO2 efforts to get the legs firing without adding too much heat strain before the start.

Racing and group rides are a great way to improve fitness for future races. However, if that's the only way you're getting intensity, the aerobic engine begins to suffer. So, be sure your training includes some time doing steady tempo efforts to keep this aspect of the engine strong

Specificity. Fun to say and even more fun to train.
Specificity refers to training specifically for an event and can make a big difference on race day. Racing a crit with a lot of corners (like the Redlands 9-corner course)? Find an empty office park and practice cornering at speed. Racing a course with lots of descending (like the Gila time trial course)? Include some high cadence intervals so you can keep pedaling to keep up the speed.

We're exactly a week away from spring and hoping to be able to get out on the mountain bike more and more (after we make it through this upcoming winter storm here in Colorado). Before the trail season gets into full swing, now's a good time to make sure everything is in working order. Change cables, charge batteries, refresh sealant, and maybe even overhaul your suspension so you can let it rip once the trails are clear. Shop dog not required...

High sugar foods are great for fueling endurance performance. However, they're not great for teeth... The high sugar content, along with the typical acidic composition, can cause tooth decay. To keep your teeth healthy, be sure to swish with plain water after a workout to help rinse the mouth. Brushing and flossing are also important but suggestions are to wait 30-60min after eating sugary, acidic foods to prevent from damaging weakened enamel (the enamel gets weakened by the acid). And of course, don't forget to get regular dentist checkups!
