Just a reminder on a few house maintenance tips before you leave on your holiday trip.

-Close all foundation vents to prevent your pipes from freezing
-Unhook your hoses from your exterior faucets
-Check the grading around your house to ensure there is proper drainage occurring and that moisture is draining away from the structure.

Ice Dam Diagram
I have been getting asked a lot of questions about ice dams and how they are caused. This diagram is the simplest one I have found that explains what is going on. Snow removal on the edges of the roof is the simplest way to prevent ice dams. In cases where damage is occuring I recommend using the heated cables to melt the ice.
