Hernias are a common condition that affect millions of Americans each year.

They often develop quietly over time and become more than just a minor inconvenience.

When left untreated, hernias can lead to serious and even life-threatening complications.

Fortunately, treatment has advanced dramatically over the years. What once required large incisions and hospital stays of several days can now often be treated with minimally invasive techniques and same‑day discharge, with recurrence rates now less than 1% in many cases.

Saint Alphonsus General Surgeon Dr. Michael Nizzi explains what a hernia is, how to recognize the symptoms, and what patients can expect from today’s state‑of‑the‑art surgical care.

The Saint Alphonsus Nightingale Award celebrates RNs and LPNs who reflect the timeless ideals of the nursing profession and the mission‑driven culture of Saint Alphonsus. 🏥

We would like to congratulate one of this year’s honorees at Saint Alphonsus Medical Center – Baker City. Cara is an exceptional Surgical Services nurse whose compassion, kindness, and patience are evident in every interaction with patients preparing for surgery. She consistently finds the good in every situation and extends that grace to each person in her care, no matter the circumstance.

Cara’s reverence for the dignity of every individual shines through in everything she does. She understands that great care extends beyond her own unit, and she regularly steps up to support other departments when a need arises. In doing so, she embodies the spirit of justice, teamwork, and our shared mission.

Please join us in congratulating Cara on this well‑deserved Saint Alphonsus Nightingale Award. 💙👇

The Saint Alphonsus Nightingale Award shines a light on nurses who go above and beyond for their patients, colleagues, and communities. Last week, we celebrated six remarkable RNs and LPNs whose commitment to excellence and service reflects the very best of our nursing profession.

We recognized and celebrated Jessica, RN as the Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center-Boise nominee.

Jessica is a night shift charge nurse on the neuro surgical and trauma intensive care unit (NEST) who exemplifies the legacy of Florence Nightingale and the mission-driven culture at Saint Alphonsus.

In her role, Jessica provides expert, vigilant care to some of our most critically ill patients. Her strong clinical judgment, advocacy for patient dignity, and calm leadership during high-acuity situations reflect nursing as a calling rooted in service.

Even on the most challenging nights, she approaches her work with cheerful compassion, positively influencing patients, families, and colleagues.

Beyond direct patient care, Jessica’s influence extends throughout the unit and organization. She currently leads initiatives and process improvements that positively impact frontline staff and patient safety.

Through her leadership, mentorship, innovation, and unwavering compassion, Jessica is a living symbol of the mission.

Join us in congratulating Jessica! 👏

The Saint Alphonsus Nightingale Award recognizes nurses who elevate care through leadership, innovation, and service. Last week, we were proud to honor six outstanding caregivers across our health system.

Stephanie, RN, of Clinical Education was one of the outstanding recipients, recognized as the nominee for Saint Alphonsus Health System.

Known for her passion for teaching, energy, and humor, Stephanie is an instructor colleagues actively seek out to learn from. She leads engaging life‑support trainings and has brought meaningful practice to the bedside that helps clinicians build confidence and strengthen lifesaving skills.

Through a coaching‑focused approach and a vision that expanded our training center to reach community partners, Stephanie has strengthened both our teams and impact beyond the hospital walls.

Her leadership and dedication to patient‑centered education make her truly deserving of the Saint Alphonsus Nightingale Award.

👏 Join us in congratulating Stephanie!
