NCTE is expanding our work with comics and primary sources! English language arts professionals are invited to apply for a new teacher-driven, collaborative learning opportunity tied to The Library of Congress's collection of comics—the largest publicly available comic book collection in the world.

Educators will work in cohorts to develop teaching and learning resources using the Library’s collection, tapping growing interest in infusing comics into ELA instruction to build valuable skills like reading comprehension, empathy, and critical thinking.

We agree

BONE was highlighted by The Atlantic as one of a handful of books you'll never outgrow! We're blown away by the recognition!

Bone, by Jeff Smith

One year in elementary school, while wandering a Scholastic Book Fair— that budding bookworm's delight—I found a graphic novel called Out From Boneville. The book's cover featured a cute, simply drawn white figure, something like a combination of Casper the Friendly Ghost and Moomin. I bought it, not suspecting the journey that awaited me.

The Bone series, comprising nine books largely self-published by Smith, is high fantasy masquerading as kid lit. It's also hilarious.

Cousins Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, and Smiley Bone explore the mysterious Valley, encountering dragons, "rat creatures," and the fierce Thorn and her Gran'ma Ben.

Out From Boneville is heavy on jokes and light on violence, but as I raced through the series, that balance flipped. By the finale, the Bones are caught in a war that's politically complex, thrilling, and, for a kid, sometimes terrifying. (Smith has said that he meant for the comic to be a "kids' book for adults.") The story never loses its humor, though, which -combined with the masterful world-building and detailed pen-and-ink illustrations— makes Bone always worth revisiting.

as we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect democracy.

Sponsor a Comics Appreciation Project (CAP) Share-Care Box to comfort children in crisis. 05/22/2026

Join us today in celebrating our Founder’s Day annual fundraiser. Every $20 received goes to provide one Share-Care box with three award-winning graphic novels to a displaced child in medical crisis or foster care.

We started CAP in 2022 with a simple mission: to use the power of comics to bring comfort, inspiration, and joy to children in foster care and medical crisis. Since then, we've given away nearly 7,000 graphic novels to kids in crisis. Your support can help us continue this work.

We only solicit two fundraisers per year: Founder's Day in late May and Giving Tuesday in early December. Our preferred donation method is through Zeffy, a platform created exclusively for nonprofits that allows supporters to give without transaction fees.

Sponsor a Comics Appreciation Project (CAP) Share-Care Box to comfort children in crisis. The Comics Appreciation Project Inc. (CAP) is a 501c3 nonprofit promoting the use of graphic novels as both an effective tool for engaging struggling readers and a legitimate medium for instilling a lifelong joy of reading. We want to engage and support all young readers, especially those in crisis....

Happy to serve on this committee for the second year.

GNCRT and the Will and Ann Eisner Family Foundation are pleased to announce the 2026 recipients of Will Eisner Graphic Novel Grants for Libraries!

The 2026 Will Eisner Graphic Novel Growth Grant is awarded to Amanda Zerangue, Jermaine Bryant, and Janelle Fuller of the University of North Texas Libraries in Denton, TX. Their project “Panels to Pathways: Graphic Novels for Independent Living, Workforce Readiness, and Library Engagement” will expand and enhance their longstanding partnership with UNT WISE’s Live & Learn Summer Program, which brings teens and young adults with disabilities to campus for immersive training in skills in independent living, job readiness, and community engagement. Panels to Pathways will integrate three new graphic novel programming components into the Libraries’ WISE summer camp experience to increase engagement with graphic novels while supporting career readiness.

The 2026 Will Eisner Graphic Novel Innovation Grant is awarded to Annisija Hunter of the Hilton M. Briggs Library, South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. Their project “Humanizing Health Sciences Education with Graphic Medicine” seeks to cultivate empathy, reduce stigma, and amplify marginalized perspectives through a new graphic medicine collection. Additionally, they are planning The Comic Relief: Healing Through Graphic Medicine event to build community among various campus colleges and departments as it introduces graphic medicine as a genre, highlights the new collection’s interdisciplinary impact, and allows participants to draw their own graphic medicine panels.

The grant recipients will be celebrated at ALA Annual during the GNCRT President’s Program on Saturday, June 27, 2026 at 10:30am CT.
