In 1841, while waiting in Austin for the Santa Fe Expedition to depart, George Wilkins Kendall joined a side trip to San Antonio. It was not the city that captured him. It was the land between Austin and San Antonio: the Texas Hill Country. He was struck by the clear, cool streams, the wide valleys, the dry climate, and the gentle breezes.

He never forgot it. For the next 11 years, through the Santa Fe imprisonment, through the Mexican War, through a trip to Europe where he met and married a beautiful Parisian named Adeline de Valcourt, he kept thinking about that land.

In 1852, he began acquiring it. In 1856, he established Post Oak Spring Ranch, a 4,000+ acre property on the Ortiz Survey, located just a few miles east of Boerne. He wrote to his wife describing it as "a pleasant and verdant valley, surrounded on all sides by rough, rocky and rugged mountains" with "rich grass" and "a beautiful stream."

He had found his home.
