Not all “rare” minerals are rare in the same way, and not every beautiful specimen is easy to care for. ✨

That’s why we created the Mineral Species Categorization Guide: a practical reference for collectors who want clearer, more consistent ways to understand mineral species beyond just name and locality.

Inside the guide, we break species down by:

1. Rarity: how scarce a species really is, both geologically and on the collector market.
2. Collector Interest: whether a species is iconic, popular, specialist-focused, or niche.
3. Display & Storage Stability: which minerals are safe on the shelf, and which need extra care.

Whether you’re building a display collection, cataloguing your specimens, comparing species, or deciding what deserves a place in your cabinet, this guide is designed to help you make more informed choices.

The Martin Stevko Collection on EarthWonders. ✨

This incredible specimen features deep purple quartz var. amethyst crystals in the classic “artichoke” growth habit from Vălişoara, the historic Porkura locality in Hunedoara County, Romania. Collected around the 1780s, and formerly in the Philip Gregory and Bill Larson collections, it is as much a piece of mineral history as it is a striking specimen.
