💙 Men's Mental Health Month: Let's Talk About Paternal Postpartum Depression 💙
When a new baby arrives, much of the attention is placed on the birthing parent—but dads and partners can struggle too.
Did you know that approximately 1 in 7 to 10 fathers experience postpartum depression or anxiety during their baby's first year, often beginning in the first few months after birth and peaking at 3-6 months postpartum?
Paternal Postpartum Depression is real, and it can look different than what typical PPD looks like in the birthing partner. Signs may include:
▪️ Increased irritability or anger
▪️ Feeling overwhelmed or disconnected
▪️ Anxiety and excessive worry
▪️ Changes in sleep or appetite
▪️ Withdrawing from loved ones
▪️ Difficulty bonding with baby
▪️ Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
The transition into parenthood is life-changing for everyone. Sleep deprivation, financial stress, changing relationships, and the pressure to "stay strong" for the family can take a significant toll on mental health.
If you're a father or partner struggling after the birth of your baby, please know this: you are not alone, and support is available.
Let's normalize checking in on dads, partners, and support people during the fourth trimester. Healthy families begin with supporting the mental health of everyone involved.
💙 This Men's Mental Health Month, let's make space for honest conversations about paternal mental health.
If you or a loved one is suffering from PPD or has mental health concerns, don't hesitate to reach out.

Thank you to Boca Midwifery for hosting a beautiful event today. As birth workers we don't always have the availability to get together and catch up. Got to see some familiar faces, meet new faces, as well as connecting with community partners.

Bringing a new life into the world is an extraordinary journey, and while many aspects are unpredictable, your birth preferences shouldn't be. Just like you plan for everything else important in your life – from your career to your finances – your birth experience deserves thoughtful consideration and preparation.
Think of your birth preferences not as a rigid rulebook, but as your personal guide for one of life's most significant events. It's a clear, concise document that communicates your wishes, values, and priorities to your healthcare team and support people.
Here's why having one is essential:
* Empowerment and Confidence: Feeling informed and prepared significantly reduces anxiety. A birth preferences plan empowers you to actively participate in decisions about your labor and delivery, rather than feeling like things are just happening to you.
* Clear Communication with Your Care Team: Even if you've discussed things verbally, a written plan ensures everyone involved—your doctor, midwife, nurses, and partner—is on the same page. This minimizes misunderstandings and helps ensure your preferences are respected, especially during the fast-paced environment of labor.
* Focus on What Matters to You: Do you envision a calm, quiet environment? Are you hoping for specific pain management options or non-medical comfort measures? Do you have preferences for immediate skin-to-skin contact or how your baby is cared for after birth? A plan helps you articulate these important details, allowing you to focus on the birthing process itself.
* Adaptability, Not Rigidity: A common misconception is that a birth plan locks you into a specific scenario. On the contrary, it serves as a foundation. While birth can be unpredictable, having a plan helps you understand your options and discuss alternatives with your care provider if circumstances change. It’s about being prepared for various possibilities while still advocating for your core desires.
* A Tool for Your Support System: Your partner or support person can use the plan as a reference to advocate for you if you're unable to communicate your wishes clearly during labor. It gives them confidence in knowing how best to support you.
Don't leave your birth experience entirely to chance. Investing a little time in creating a birth preferences plan is an investment in a more positive, informed, and empowering journey into parenthood. It's about setting yourself up for the best possible experience, no matter how your unique birth story unfolds.

Birth partners play a crucial role in the birth room and can make a huge difference in the outcome of the birth. Although you cannot guarantee any one specific outcome, you can help ensure that the birthing person remains in a calm headspace by providing positive support. Unsure of how to go about this? Hire a birth doula and create the ultimate birth team.

Feeling like nausea has taken over your life?
Morning sickness is very common, especially in the first 3 months, and it’s thought to affect about 70% of mamas-to-be.
Typically, pregnancy sickness gets better around week 16, but about 10% of pregnant people may continue to have symptoms after 20 weeks!
A few things that may help include:
👉🏽Identifying your triggers
👉🏽Eating small frequent meals
👉🏽Staying hydrated wisely
👉🏽Harnessing the power of ginger
👉🏽Using acupressure bands
👉🏽Even alcohol swabs
But if nausea is severe or you're losing weight, it's time to seek professional help.

Growing a baby is hard work. Birthing a baby is hard work. Raising a child while healing from birth, is hard work. Your body is doing amazing things and you are doing an amazing job. It's ok if you need a little help. You have earned it. Hiring a doula is a great way to help alleviate the stress of everyday tasks such as, laundry, cooking, cleaning, meal prepping, washing bottles or pump parts while you just spend time with your little one. Maybe even taking a shower or eating an uninterrupted meal while your doula watches over the little ones. How does that sound?
