September is Su***de Prevention Month.

Su***de prevention is not only what happens in the moment of crisis.

Sometimes it looks like checking on the spouse whose service member is away.

Continuing to invite the person who keeps saying no.

Educating them and getting them access to the right resources.

Believing someone when they tell you they’re not okay.

And sometimes it looks like asking the hard question:

“Are you thinking about su***de?”

In 2023, 146 military family members died by su***de — including 98 spouses and 48 dependents.

1 is one too many.

What happens before someone reaches that point, matters.

Connection matters.
Access to care matters.
Taking people seriously matters.
Removing barriers matters.
Following up matters.
Staying when things get hard matters.

Military families carry a lot, and too often there is pressure to be resilient, push through, keep functioning, and keep the hard parts quiet.

We need communities where military spouses and military children are allowed to say:

“This is HARD.”

“I am NOT okay.”

“I need HELP.”

And we NEED people around them who know what to do, when they don’t.

I created a Military Family Mental Health Resources sheet with direct links to a variety of crisis prevention and intervention sources.
