What is Prevention | Introduction
90% of people who have a substance use disorder started using alcohol or drugs before they turned 18. This is why we work so hard to prevent the onset of all the Big Bad 5 the Centers for Disease Control says puts students at risk - drugs, alcohol, s*xual activity, violence and ni****ne. For more information or to join us in our prevention efforts please visit our websites at e3familysolutions.org and sumtercap.org and work with us as we build protective factors in our youth and our community.

Generation Z Depression on the Rise
Depression is a very serious issue, especially when it comes to the teenagers of Generation Z (Gen Z). Teenagers are more depressed than ever. According to a study done by PEW Research in 2017, 59% of American teens ages 12 to 17 said they experienced at least one major depressive episode in 2017.
In 2017, it was found that teen girls are three times as likely as teen boys to experience a depressive episode. At the same time, statistics show girls are more likely to seek out and receive help for their depression.
Unfortunately, we cannot identify a singular cause to the rise in Gen Z depression. Many experts link depressive behavior to social media, technology and the pressure that comes with being a teen. However, it is important to recognize the role that relationships play in mental health. Another study done by the Centers for Disease Control found that teens who felt "engaged, supported and cared for" were much less likely to become depressed.
Iif you are suffering from clinical depression, we encourage you to seek professional help.
If you are a parent of a child suffering with depression, there are resources for you as well. Check out Axis's A Parent's Guide to Depression and Anxiety.

Nothing like a little cowboy shuffle @ Lecanto High School. Today we learned that sometimes, in life, our way isn't always the best way. When we rush and are not intentional with our actions and goals, we may find that, just like with our cowboy on the left, things can get a little tricky and may take a while longer.
So if doing things the right way can place us on the shorter and easier path to success... what is that right way?
Well, research has shown that people who complete the following steps, in order, have a 90% chance of escaping poverty.
1. Get a high school diploma
2. Work-full time / enroll in college
3. Marry before having children
Be like the cowboy on the right and do things the right way. Don't be afraid to take your time, shake things up when you make mistakes, and keep your eyes on the prize.

Parents beware!!
Minutes into the second episode of HBO’s teen drama series Euphoria, the teenaged star is shown taking drugs with a new friend, hallucinating and talking about how happy she feels. Then, in voiceover narration, she says:
“I know you’re not allowed to say it, but drugs are kinda cool.”
Rue, the star, is shown returning to her dealer (portrayed as a child of 9 or 10) and buying psychotropic pills, which she offers to share with her new friend Jules. In the midst of her drug-induced hallucinations, Rue says “I’m just so happy.”
The illegal drug market couldn’t get any better advertising than that.
Euphoria is teaching our children which drugs to buy, how to use them and how to hide the fact you’re using from their parents. It shows how to beat a home drug test. And worst of all, its episodes are ignoring the unquestionably devastating toll drugs take on one’s mental and physical health, life, livelihood and family.
It would be great if media gurus were interested in the health and future of our youth instead of their wallets but that is a battle for others. Our cause is Equipping Youth with skills to understand media manipulation and not buy the lie that everybody is doing it.
Live Action
This is atrocious. The same Teen Vogue writer who told teens how to take and distribute naked selfies is now telling them how to get an abortion without their parents' knowledge. Be mindful of the information your children are consuming.

Remember that famous movie line, "Houston, we have a problem." Well today it could be, America, we have a problem. That problem is su***de.
Su***de is the third leading cause of death for youth between the ages of 10 and 24, and results in approximately 4,600 lives lost each year. Boys are more likely than girls to die from su***de. Of the reported su***des in the 10 to 24 age group, 81% of the deaths were males and 19% were females. Girls, however, are more likely to report attempting su***de than boys.
Protective Factors for preventing su***de include: Connectedness to individuals, family, community, and social institutions
Life skills (including problem solving skills and coping skills, ability to adapt to change)
Self-esteem and a sense of purpose or meaning in life; Cultural, religious, or personal beliefs that discourage su***de
Effective behavioral health care.
One great resource is the 741741 text hotline. Please make sure the young people you know are aware of this number and let them know, "You're Not Alone." For more information please check our website sumtercap.org

YOLO App Snapchat Safety
Guide for Parents
According to Axis, a new, third-party app called YOLO has partnered with Snapchat in allowing users to anonymously respond to other users' questions.
The app has quickly become the number one free app in the iOS App Store. "YOLO once again proves teens' desires to have space to share thoughts anonymously," Axis wrote in a recent Cultural Translator.
Similar apps have been banned for facilitating bullying, but for now parents and educators should ask teens if they have used the app. Ask how they know where the line is between anonymity, bullying and gossip. Do they think the anonymity is worth the risk of being hurt or getting negative responses?
Watch the video below for helpful tips regarding YOLO.
