"I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order." -- John Burroughs

Hopefully we can get back to camping at Vogel State Park soon. Not only for getting back to nature, but also to go to 2 places we always visit up there -- JR's Roadkill BBQ & Ribs and Sunrise Grocery. They all feel like "home". Suburban life is convenient, but I'm more of a country boy.
Today, we got to experience something we never have before in any Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites: we woke up to SNOW at Vogel State Park! That may not be too big of a deal to many people, but being from South Georgia, living only a few miles above the Georgia/Florida line, we can count on one hand how many times we've seen snow, so this was a big deal, even if it was a light dusting!

I walked out before sunrise to capture a few shots before the sun started to melt the little bit of snow that stuck. Sure enough, later in the day, you couldn't even tell that snow had fallen earlier!

I captured these photos using a Canon 5D Mark IV with a 16-35mm lens.

One of Georgia’s Oldest and Most Beloved State Parks

Vogel is located at the base of Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest. Driving from the south, visitors pass through Neel Gap, a beautiful mountain pass near Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia. Vogel is particularly popular during the fall when the Blue Ridge Mountains transform into a rolling blanket of red, yellow and gold leaves. Hikers can choose from a variety of trails, including the popular 4-mile Bear Hair Gap loop, an easy lake loop that leads to Trahlyta Falls, and the challenging 13-mile Coosa Backcountry Trail.

Cottages, campsites and primitive backpacking sites provide a range of overnight accommodations. The park’s 22 acre lake is open to non-motorized boats, and during summer, visitors can cool off at the mountain-view beach. This park is rich in history, with many facilities being constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during our nation’s Great Depression. The "CCC Boys" story is told in the park's museum. The CCC museum is open seasonally.

Vogel State Park, established in 1931, is the second oldest state park in Georgia. Located at 2500 feet above sea level, Vogel sits at the base of Blood Mountain, the highest summit on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia, and is surrounded by Chattahoochee National Forest. The North Georgia Mountains around Vogel were linked to Native American people for generations before European settlement. They were said to be the home of the immortal spirit people known as “Nunnehi,” translated as – “the people who live forever.” Legend states that the names of Blood Mountain and nearby Slaughter Mountain, have their origins in warfare between competing Cherokee and Creek tribes. Another story tells of treasure placed on Blood Mountain in the days leading up to the infamous Trail of Tears, when Cherokee warriors supposedly buried tribal treasure, including weapons and gold, in a cave on Blood Mountain. Many searches have been made over the years, however, and the location of the hidden treasure, if it ever existed except in the minds of storytellers, remains a mystery. Whether these legends are based in fact, no one knows, but the influence and enduring legacy of Native American culture on the region is without question.
