Union County Canning Plant

This summer we have learned to process a new product called Brandied Apples. The process involves processing sliced apples in a sugar solution with a small amount of Brandy added to the solution after cooking it. Then the solution is poured over the apples in the jar.

Patrick Fix, Kristy Peney, County Agent Jacob Williams and I traveled to UGA Food Science to receive some training regarding some new equipment we will be using at the Canning Plant this year.

The Canning Plant will open as scheduled on July 7th but with new procedures due to COVID-19. You must make an appointment by calling (706) 439-6043 to allow for social distancing. Appointments will be offered in 2 time periods 6am-8:45am and 9am-11:45am. Sorry but no walkups will be permitted. The Union County Canning Plant will conduct a Food Preservation Workshop on June 24 from 10 a.m until 1 p.m. Our guest speaker is Jesse Moore, Gilmer County Cooperative Extension County Director. She will discuss the basics of canning vegetables.

Grab some beans from 7 M to benefit Union County FFA then head over to the cannery to preserve them on Tuesday!

Just a quick note.

Ryan from our Union County Ag Center just dropped off 3 bushels of those awesome Bush Snap Beans again — that the kids had planted —- we’re selling these for these kids so they can continue with more farming in the future.
The price is $45 a bushel and 100% of the sale goes back to our Ag Students !!

So if anyone wants a bushel of these Snap Beans I can meet you at the Farms Store tomorrow at a specific time just let me know.

As most know we’re closed Mondays but I will still meet you so you can, can these beans of freeze them !!

Union County Farmers Market will be holding it's annual Canning Contest this Saturday, July27th. Awards will be based on appearance of product, head space in jar, and technique in the following categories: Jams/Jellies, Fruits, Green Beans, Dried Beans, Pickled Products and Tomatoes. Entry forms are available in the Union County Canning Plant and on the Farmers Market website http://www.unioncountyga.gov/farmers-market/events/
Bring completed form(s) and canned item(s) to the Canning Plant by 9am on Saturday. Winners will be announced at noon.
