“It is the four-year anniversary of Sophia's thyroid cancer surgery. Every year, I think, gets a little bit better.
The thing no one tells you about cancer is that it's not just a physical issue. The cancer can be removed and the follow-up scans can be clear, and yet, there is still the anxiety of "I had cancer" hanging there, in the balance.
But now, four years later, I see my daughter as the incredibly strong (and strong-willed), insightful, driven young woman that can say she's been through some stuff and come out on the other side.
She took this bad hand life dealt her and wrestled with it and felt the emotion of it and eventually pushed through it.
It's been hard and messy and ugly and awful and yet inspiring and uplifting and amazing all at the same time. And I'm so thankful every single day for her health. And thankful everyday for the doctors and surgeons and yeah, the therapist, who helped get her here.
So, it's bittersweet. For a long time, it didn't feel like a day to celebrate, but somehow, this year, it does. Because it was the day they took the cancer. Her first step toward healing.
And that's something I will never, ever, take for granted. What a gift.” -Courtney
Thanks for sharing Sophia’s inspiring story, Courtney!

Which one should a cancer patient choose? Treat their cancer, pay their rent or feed their family? The answer, of course, is all of the above. But the U.S. Senate is talking about stripping the paid family and medical leave program from the Build Back Better Act, meaning this is a real choice that millions of cancer patients and caregivers might have to continue making. Ask your senator to keep this program in the bill. https://bit.ly/3GR5KVP

"and now onto radiation. ☢️ Every weekday between today and August 25th my chest, armpit, and base of my neck will be blasted with beams. 25 rounds to help kill any possible remaining cancer cells left after chemo and surgery. I’m not really nervous about the radiation itself because it doesn’t hurt, but more so what the side effects will be for me. I’m told to expect fatigue and the skin to be burned. These should show up starting about the halfway point and continue to get worse until 2 weeks after I finish. Just how much fatigue and how bad of a burn is different for every person, so I’ll just have to wait and see how it goes. Seeing as how I’m still pretty fatigued from the 5 months of chemo, I’m not looking forward to that getting worse. I think lunchtime naps are going to be in my future. There is also the possibility that the little bit of lymphedema I developed after surgery will get worse since they are zapping my lymph nodes too. So I’ll continue with physical therapy once a week, wearing my compression sleeve, and doing at-home manual drainage techniques throughout radiation to try and keep that at bay. But for now, I’m going to stay positive and take things one day at a time. 🎀🎗" -Michelle

Next up is the Senate, and we need to make sure we’re ready! Text CURES to 40649 to make sure you don’t miss any opportunities to tell your lawmakers we need to fund new treatments and cures for cancer!
